Former president of MADD chapter busted for DUI

A former president of the defunct local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was arrested recently by the Gainesville Police Department on a DUI charge.

Debra Oberlin, 48, was arrested after she had difficulty on a field sobriety test. She registered a .234 and .239 on breath alcohol tests. Florida's legal limit for driving is .08.

    Yes and no.

The world is filled with people that make mistakes. If making mistakes precludes us from fighting for something, then none of us have a ground to stand on.

Excellent point. I in no way defend what Debra Oberlin allegedly did but all of us screw up in some way.

Yeah, but the irony is that MADD pushes for tougher laws on DUI/OVI cases all the time. They're (mostly) behind the mandatory jail time / mandatory in-patient alcohol treatment that comes with a conviction (even for social drinkers who make a bad decision but otherwise drink responsibility the other 99.9% of the time). MADD became so prohibitionist in focus that even the founder (the original mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver) has spoken out against the organization.

They're among the LEAST likely organizations to ever chalk up an OVI arrest (even at the lower end of the .08 per se limit) to a "we all screw up in some way" line of thinking.

Yep, hopefully she will plead guilty and request the judge give her the strictest sentence allowed under his sentencing guidelines.

She probably knows the prosecutor. She's probably called him/her to request harsher sentences for OVI/DUI offenders.

Probably not, for those not reading the article her chapter of MADD closed down 15 years ago.

As a prosecutor, I know it's highly unlikely that anyone in the local prosecutor's office would know or care who the local MADD chapter president is.

A few years back, Ohio had a city mayor who got a DUI the night before he was supposed to be part of a MADD function the next morning.
