    The Pitching Helmet?

“The Easton-Bell Sports pitching helmet prototype uses lightweight energy managing materials to provide protection to the most vulnerable areas of the head, without compromising comfort or performance. The helmet is made of expanded polystyrene polycarbonate, which is attached to a comfortable liner and elastic strap.”

If a base coach 90 feet away from the batter needs a helmet now, why not put one on the player who is 60 feet 6 inches away?

Let's just put each player in a bubble. That way, no one would get hurt.

The third base coach shouldn't need a helmet. One freak accident in the minor leagues resulted in MLB overreacting.

I saw this on TV the other day. It looks kinda like a bike helmet but not as big. I'm not sure this really needs to be done even though it seems more pitchers are getting hit nowdays.

From what I've seen, pitchers seem to need a hockey goalies mask more than a helmet.

I'd be more inclined to go with styrofoam bats.

I see their train of thought with helmets for pitchers. That said, let's be practical about this. Some pitchers have very violent deliveries that may cause the helmet to fall off during the delivery or follow through. Of course a chin strap could solve that problem but can someone pitch effectively wearing a helmet? Some could, no doubt. Others, perhaps not.

I'd love to see Chris Carpenter or Carlos Zambrano with a bicycle helmet and a chin strap on the mound.

How would he explain it to his son?

Some pitchers may want it to fall off as a distraction to the hitters. This could be fun if pitchers have to wear a helmet.

I didn't think about that but that's possible too. Another thing is that during a day game, there may be some glare off the helmet that could cause problems.

There are plenty of kids who are hurt every year. A better solution would be to drop aluminum bats.
