    Homer to the DL

According to Walt, an impingement in his elbow (I have no clue what this is). He'll start the year on the DL. LeCure taking his place for now apparently. (all this according to Marty/WLW)

Unbelievable. So much for all that depth now. Bailey and Cueto on the DL, Arroyo is sick. Hopefully Homer will miss only two starts like they are saying.

Really going to test this 'depth' theory I guess.

This Spring Training has been very disappointing from a starting pitching standpoint.

    Re: Homer to the DL

Well, I'd rather we get all this out of the way NOW instead of mid season. At least it all sounds fairly minor for all 3 of them.

IMO, the wildness of Volquez is more concerning than ANY of the injury/illness problems.

I'm not really worried about it. It sounds like Bailey and Cueto are both only going to miss 2-3 starts.

Send Chapman to AAA, stretch him out, and plop him in the rotation. Seriously.

Aroldis Chapman should have been starting this spring. Very disappointing that the Reds didn't give him a chance to start. Now we're down to three starting pitchers going into the regular season.

    Huh?

    Volquez
    Arroyo
    Wood
    Leake
    Maloney/LeCure

Wow, nuts. With Cueto and Arroyo still unknown....
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I agree with this. There is no reason Chapman should be pitching in the 8th inning unless he already pitched innings 1-7. Why invest in the guy and then make him a setup man...He has a chance to be special as a SP, make him a SP...

    Bum

I think he meant 3 affective pitchers. Leake could use time at AAA and Maloney/Lecure? Pass...

Of the Reds projected rotation, two are starting the season the DL and another is sick.

That blows. Hopefully it is minor, but Carpenter missed a ton of time after having a similar impingement diagnosis at the outset of the 2007 season. Hopefully this will be of a different magnitude.

Just to get it out of the way, I have no idea how he explained that to his son.

    Re: Homer to the DL

    From John Fay:

“It’s something he could pitch with,” Jocketty said. “But discussing with Dr. (Tim) Kremchek, Dusty (Baker) and Bryan (Price), we decided to shut him down for about a week. Then he’ll start throwing again. We anticipate him missing his first two starts.

“It’s could have pitched with but it would have lingered through the year. He feels fine. He’s pitching fine. But in certain areas when he gets his arm back, he feels a little something.”

Btw guys, it's the SHOULDER, not the elbow. I heard it wrong the first time.

    wow.

the wheels seem to be falling off the bus before it leaves the parking lot.

when a pitcher goes to the dl with any arm issue i am always concerned. 2-3 starts can turn into much longer. i hope both Johnny & Homer's issues really are minor.
