A malcontent and a diminishing talent, sounds just right for the 2005 Reds.

Alas, those days are past for this franchise currently.

It Bailey/Cueto are only going to miss 2-3 starts, then no, I wouldn't make that deal but I would at least consider it if those two are going to miss more time than that.
    So, deal or no deal?

Recipe for doing nothing: Not wanting guys out there for nothing because they come with significant warts, and not wanting to give up top ten prospects for guys who profile as league average BOR.

Not an easy call, I admit. Especially at the beginning of the season when it seems like you have a lot of time to sort things out.

Good. I like to see a player that's hungry and willing to do whatever it takes to force his way onto the 40 man.

Silva is the kind of guy who was custom made for Dusty Baker to manage. He could come in and sit down with Baker and both of them could talk about how the Cubs did them each wrong, then talk about how every time the Reds beat the Cubs, Dusty gets a little smile on his face. Then before you know it the malcontent is a Reds club house guy who has something to prove to a rival.

And if that doesn't work out there is always Rolen and Gomes who can help keep him in line.....or else!

I'd definitely take a flyer on him if Cueto or Bailey were expected to spend any signifigant amount of time on the DL.

And then he'll go out and give up home run after home run at a Milton-esque pace.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Yes, and then he'd throw a huge tantrum if Price suggested any changes or if Dusty moved him out of the rotation.

It would be different if Silva actually produced since last year's all star break, but he's been horrible since then.. Normally, I'm all a move like this, but I think Silva would make us remember Josh Fogg much more fondly..

Is getting kicked off of Carlos Zambrano's Cubs for disruptive behavior kind of like being kicked out of Guns and Roses because you couldn't clean up your act?

    Okay.
But I think the point stands.
Silva is easily big enough to eat a player like, say, Johnny Cueto.

I understand that if a Danny-Rae is digested, the outcry wont be too significant other than potential criminal charges, but the risk of losing a more star player is not worth the signing.

Can you imagine if you tried to eat a Votto or a Bruce? Maybe he wouldn't get all the way through, but based on BP's projections, if Votto's head was eaten, his chances of attrition goes right through the roof.

Re: Cubs release Silva citing "performance" as the reason

I'm iffy on Silva, but the idea of adding a 5th starter is a good one. Its not necessarily for the upgrade from Lecure to some other interchangeable part, but on a team that projects to get very few starts beyond the 5th inning for the first month or two, Lecure is just the guy this bullpen needs. He, Maloney and Ondrusek would allow the team to have somebody available who can go two or three innings every day and, IMO, this team will need that if we don't want the pen all used up by the end of May. If it means a lesser inning guy like say Burton or Bray goes down, so be it.

The idea now is to keep the season from going down the drain until the other guys get back. When Bailey and Cueto return, even in the best scenario, they are both going to be guys coming off of sore arms and decent sized lay-offs and it may take them a while to get to the point of going deep in games. Add Arroyo's Mono, and the pen is going to be pretty heavily taxed for the foreseeable future.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

I'd rather go after a guy like Doug Davis before Silva.

Is that a Steven Adler reference?
