Phillips' move today to avoid getting tagged was a great example of when "baseball IQ" and/or athletic ability can make things happen in a game that don't show up in the boxscore or statistics. The Reds only win the game because of the play, but there is no stat that captures that value. Within the course of a baseball game there are quite a few things like that going on, like the way a catcher calls a game, or the way an OF'r adjusts his positioning for different batters, or base-running skills. Even though I believe in stats I also think they are an imperfect measure of value.
Great win for the Reds today.
