Plays that don't show up in the boxscore

Phillips' move today to avoid getting tagged was a great example of when "baseball IQ" and/or athletic ability can make things happen in a game that don't show up in the boxscore or statistics. The Reds only win the game because of the play, but there is no stat that captures that value. Within the course of a baseball game there are quite a few things like that going on, like the way a catcher calls a game, or the way an OF'r adjusts his positioning for different batters, or base-running skills. Even though I believe in stats I also think they are an imperfect measure of value.

Great win for the Reds today.

No argument there. If Phillips doesn't avoid the tag the Reds don't win. Rolen's busting it down the line on that same play is another example. Play hard and good things happen.

Corky's mustache didn't show up in the box score, however it was there in spirit.

...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.
