And there we get to the heart of it. Just like how Reds fans wanted to (and essentially succeeded in) run Dunn out of town on a rail just because he wasn't Albert Pujols. We already have a superstar in Votto, Bruce just turned 24 and isn't a finished product. And he's still younger than all of those guys listed.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

The OP is 9 days ahead of last year's pace. At that rate, he should be changing his name in about a month or so.

What your chart fails to show is the type of bats these players are having. All of these guys, with all due to respect to Bruce, have proven a lot more than Bruce has.

I love Bruce as much as the next guy, but he's simply having a tough time laying off breaking pitches and having bad at bats.

It is way early to be concerned by the overall performances of guys like Bruce and Volquez. But it isn't too early to be worried about things like not being able to find the plate and looking clueless at the plate in half of your ABs.

One thing about these two is that they were generally pretty hyped by many posters this offseason. Maybe some wouldn't be as disappointed in their starts if their names weren't found in close proximity to phrases like "top 5 in MVP voting", "TOR starter" and ""breakout season". It doesn't surprise me that some would be so disappointed in their starts.

Reds fans didn't run Dunn out of town. His time was up here.

Nice at bat by Bruce to end the game against a struggling righty who was firing up mediocre fastballs.

I think we're past being patient with Bruce. Crating hasn't worked, neither has shaking a can of pennies at him. Getting him fixed didn't even help.

It's time to put him down.

I know some of you have grown attached, but I promise to take you all down to the MLB Pro Shop and we'll get a new outfielder that you'll all love!

Yeah, and of all the people who wanted Dunn out of town; I was never close being one of them. I always loved his production, consistency, and with Dunn I never once got the feeling that he lacked confidence or that he was never going to hit again. His cold streaks were not as bad; his dips not as long and as barren as that of Bruce. With Bruce when he's slumping I truly wonder if he ever hits again.

Gee you're really funny there, Raisor. Did you see Bruce swing through that pitch every big league middle of the order hitter dreams about to end the game or were you busy typing up this little giggler? Whether you're hot or cold that should have been a three run home run, he could not have asked for a better pitch to drive.

Except Bruce's defense makes up for every bit of shortcomings his offensive game has in comparison to Dunn.

Still just 9 games in. I really do think you're taking his performance personally. It's almost as if, since you've admitted you like him and think he's a great guy - that you feel personally betrayed when he goes into a slump. Just take a step back sometimes and remember it's just a game, these players are not our friends or our family - they're employees of our favorite team. They're not robots, they're humans.

Maybe true in most cases, but I'm 99.5% sure Ichiro is a robot.

Dunn could rival anyone in terms of awful streaks. Sure, I wish Bruce was performing better. True, maybe he's not going to have a MONSTER season like we all anticipated. But for goodness sakes, he's going to produce. Just because he's flailing away now doesn't mean he'll look this way all season. He always takes a little time to get going.

Not taking it personally. I guess I just really believed this was the year he would leap into Ryan Braun-type production. He's always going to be a great defender. He's always going to be a great teammate and model citizen, these are the reasons you want a guy like him to succeed. I guess I just feel very, very wrong on him--I thought he was can't miss.

But why does he have to live to the standards of any other player? Why can't he just be Jay Bruce?

And not that I'm saying this about Bruce (because I'm confident he'll bust out of this), but there have been plenty, plenty of "can't miss" types that don't live up their lofty expectations. Austin Kearns for example.

True, but he was a lightning rod from day 1 onward. Every single season he played for The Reds he was criticized by fans and the media - Marty especially.
