    Article on Hanigan

This is a great article about how Hanigan calls a game from behind the plate. I remember Walt saying that he really values catchers and for good reason - they are the ones who have to decide how to approach the pitch sequence. I thought Hanigan's ability to analyze the situation and rely less on scouting reports really shows how analytical he is when giving the signs to the pitcher. It's no wonder that his 3.36 ERA posted while calling the game was better than the team ERA of 4.01 for the season. Now if he can only speak Spanish fluently...

I would like to see Hanigan catch Volquez next time he goes out, it might help.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. The other option would be Bryan Price hypnotizing him so that Volquez thinks the first inning is over.

Start Matt Maloney for an inning and bring Volquez in for the second inning.

Intelligent, analytical, well prepared catchers are invaluable. That's why the Red Sox keep Varitek around at age 39 even though he can't hit his weight. Their pitchers are constantly talking about how he controls the game from behind the plate.
