    Jet Boats

My dad just bought a lakehouse in the Irish Hills in Michigan and he asked me what kind of boat he should get.

I said he should get one of those smaller maneuverable jet boats like Sea Doo used to make. I have been doing a little of research and it seems like Yamaha and Scarab make the closest thing to what I am thinking of with the old Sea Doo line. They sit 3-4 people and are really just meant to be like a boat equivalent of a sea doo, not really cruising vessels. Anyone know what I’m talking about? Anyone have any suggestions? The Yamaha’s seem a bit expensive and I don’t know anything about scarab.
What would you say.....ya do here?

    Re: Jet Boats

I have nothing specific to say about jet boats, just be careful buying based on brand names. Make sure a company with a valued reputation is still owned by the same owners and haven't been bought by private equity or what have you.

I was just reading about a boat manufacturer named Oyster - they were bought by a private equity firm, loaded down with debt, and then declared bankruptcy after having their most profitable quarter ever.

That kind of thing causes stuff like this: a $10 million yacht losing its keel, total loss: http://wavetrain.net/news-a-views/70...olina-star-iii

It has me thinking lately about companies I assume are good based on reputation.

Am I the only one who thought of the sandwiches they have on the Jet's Pizza menu?

If your father has never been a boat owner, make sure he considers a tow vehicle with enough power to get boat to ramp, and pull it out of the water when finished.

He has been a boat owner and does have a pickup powerful enough.

We had a 18 ft Sea Ray last cottage. He called me up after he got this one and said was looking at a pair of jet skis, but I said why not a jet boat instead. He actually took my advice and bought the 165 scarab.
