The reason our eyes don't tell us the same thing is because Stubbs swings and misses a greater percentage of the time than Janish. Swinging and missing creates a much more negative impression to us than swinging and making contact, therefore making us think that Janish has been much more controlled at the plate. The truth is, though, that Stubbs has exhibited better plate discipline than Janish; he simply isn't as good at making contact.
Fair enough. But I think that distinction makes Janish a more difficult out for pitchers, especially if he can fight some of those pitches off and stay alive.

I just grow increasingly impatient with watching Stubbs flail away at a pitch that isn't remotely in the zone. He's got to overcome that if he's ever going to reach his potential.
Rounding third and heading for home...

I think everyone would agree that Stubbs is not an ideal leadoff hitter. But until they make a roster move it is choosing the lesser of evils there.

Right there with you. I cannot stand seeing people swing at bad pitches; it's what frustrates me so much with Bruce this year. He's swinging at 33% of pitches outside the strike zone (29% last year), which is unacceptable. His swinging strike percentage is right there with last year, but that 4% increase in swinging at pitches outside the zone is killing his production. Even when you make contact with a pitch outside the zone, you're usually not going to make very good contact.

It's now a save situation. Tying run is on deck.

Ugh, swung at the first pitch. They need baserunners, no reason for Stubbs to flail away at the first pitch.
