“You want more production out of every spot,” Baker said. “Until we move Scott back to the fourth slot and Brandon up to two, it’s going to be a situation where we’re hitting-and-running with that spot and bunting with that spot. That’s a spot — especially when your leadoff man’s getting on — that you can carry.
“What you hate to do is put that person at the bottom of the order. Then you don’t get much production or turnover at the bottom in order to get to the top. You try to space your lineup with guys who are productive, with guys who are on the way to being productive, so that a pitcher doesn’t have an easy way at seven, eight, nine.”
Baker planned to make the move with Rolen few days ago. But the Reds had won five straight and scored 6, 7, 9, 7 and 7 in the five games.
“I talked to (Rolen) and he said things are fine the way they are. Leave it that way,” Baker said. “You do that sometimes, too. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
