You've apparently blotted out most of Naehring's tenure as minor league coordinator from your memory. Smart move. It was painful. He had the gig from October, 2000-February, 2006 and was responsible for the purplest patch of development in team history. I don't care if he's the nicest fellow you've ever met, he was an abject failure as a farm director.

In fact, pushing Naehring aside might rank above Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena and Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens on Wayne Krivsky's greatest hits list.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that was really an era where the only players who came out of the Reds farm system unscathed and productive were players (Dunn, Kearns, etc.) literally too talented to fail.

Pitchers? You might as well have put an advanced-A ball team in Kremcheck's office and made it an official stop on the development chart.

Absolutely. His time as a Cardinal actually improved his image quite a bit.

I believe Naehring was the minor league field coordinator. He was fired as a a major overhaul of the minor league system. He may be a tempting target, but I don't think he is really a fair target for years of ineffectiveness.

He had carte blanche over the minor league system from 2000-2006, so he was the guy running the system.

Again, I'd place a decent portion of the blame on the scouting side as well and who they were providing the PD system with, but Naehring was the top dog.

Naehring spent the 2001-2005 seasons as the Reds' director of player development. A Cincinnati native, he played eight seasons for the Boston Red Sox. As minor league field coordinator, he was the Reds' top-ranking on-field instructor in the minors.

"I know what I brought to the organization for a number of years," Naehring said Monday night. "I'm disappointed. I'm from Cincinnati, I've done a lot for this community, I've done a lot for the Reds. I'm very happy for what the minor leagues were able to do, I'm happy what players I signed personally - like Javier Valentin, Norris Hopper and Ryan Freel - were able to bring to the organization. I'm very happy for Jay Bruce and I thought we had a very good year in the minor leagues."

Gadzooks. Just what I'd want to be remembered for, a porn 'stache, a bunter, and a guy who was more dangerous to his teammates than the opponents. Lord love a duck.

Good stuff, M2. Don't be such a stranger.

Has performed well everywhere......is he expected to move quickly this year up the ladder?

I said minor league coordinator in my post (and the position was, effectively, the Reds' farm director).

And he is absolutely a fair target for the organization's outright failure to develop players during the 5+ years when he was in charge of the Reds' player development.

You're now seeing the organization produce a steady stream of talent and many of those players have overcome some serious struggles on the way. The difference between today and the farm system on Naehring's watch couldn't be more stark. The Reds deserve a lot of credit for fixing something that was clearly broken.

If you pat yourself on the back for signing Freel, Hopper, and Valentin... That might give you a small glimpse as to why it didnt work out

You know, I've never seen Chip & Tim Naehring in the same room together. Hmmm.

Good to see you around, M2.
