I'v recently started gambling a bit. Nothing too serious, I don't bring more than 5 or 6 grand into the Casino. I usually just play Roulette as I tink slots are a scam. The game I'm really interested in is Craps, I really do not get how to play it? Can someone give me an explanation on how a begginer should go about trying to play?

Craps, is good if you know what you are doing. Roulette is one of the worst odds at winning. Poker, if you are skilled is probably the best odds. If you play the machines, look for the ones that payback the most, 99 percent or higher. On machines, the higher the minimum bet the higher the payback, usually. Watch out for the penny machines, if you hit MAX BET, you may not realize you maybe betting $4.50 or more a play. Find a favorite casino and sign up for their players card. Use it all the time. If you are carrying 5 or 6 grand into the casino, you should be comped very well, FREE FOOD, FREE HOTEL STAYS, FREE PLAY, FREE SHOWS, ETC.
Also, some Casinos sometimes will have some classes on how to play. Again, if you are bringing 5 to 6 thousand into a casino, it wouldn't hurt to hire someone to give you some personal lessons before you go. The more knowledge you have, the better the odds for you.
Craps is by far the most exciting and most difficult game in Casinos.
The best way to play is to play the pass line and numbers straight up or play the come line. In all these cases, play the odds for as high as you can, as that is where you can win big. Stay away from the field, it is one of the worst bets you can make in a casino.
However, what makes craps so exciting is that you can win lots of money in a hurry and lose lots of money in a hurry, so be careful.

Many Vegas casino's offer free lessons on how to play craps. Check with the concierge about a lesson. There are also videos out there that you can rent. The first couple of times I played, I went 3 friends and we were the only ones at the table, which made it less intimidating.

I have made alot of money on craps over the years. Focus on the pass line (be sure to back it up with odds), the come line and sometimes the 6 and 8. All other bets are sucker bets. If you play the above you will have some of the best odds of any game in the casino.

I usually bring in about $500 and sit down at poker tables. Rarely do I leave on the red. Poker imo is the best casino "game" they offer.

I've never played poker in a casino, but would love to. Of course I don't play a regular poker game any more either, so I'm sure I'm pretty rusty and would struggle to get back into things. I agree though, if you're skilled, poker is your best bet. I was once told, by someone I played with regularly, who also hit Grand Vic (when they used to have a poker room, before getting rid of it, only to bring it back when poker started to boom) that I could make a good amount of money at the 2nd level ante games. I guess on the low level, at least back then, it was pretty hard to push players out of the game which means they'd catch on the river when they shouldn't have been playing that deep into the game to begin with (like catching an inside straight). I guess 1 level up you'll get games where people will play a little smarter, and leave you less susceptle to people pulling hands out their backsides. Playing blackjack by the book gets you pretty close to even odds in the casino, I think I've read something like 48%, but black jack can get boring at times, IMHO.
anyhoo, on to craps. A lot of casinos will explain the game to you, or have a "teaching hour" More common in Vegas than the indiana casinos, but I'm sure they offer it as well. If you want to learn, hit the table early in the morning (like 9:00 am on a Sunday) when it will be sparsely populated, and have the dealers explain it to you. Tip them well and they'll more than likely be happy to point out the details as the tables tend to be pretty slow. Tables are also pretty cheap at that time, meaning you can play at low minimums while learning. Google "craps" and you'll find a bunch of web sites that will explain the game and the odds. There are also free internet version you can play that you can learn the basics.
In the long run, stay away from the middle of the table. Sure you can win big, but in the end it will bleed you dry. Craps is the most exciting table game in the casino, but the way I play can be a little boring to many. However, its served me well; I don't play a ton, but I've won more than I lost over the years, both in overall money and in times standing at a table. Basically I start w/ 1 unit (lets say $5) on the come line. Once a number is established, I'll back my come line bet up w/ $5 on a 4 or a 10, $10 on a 5 or a 9 and $15 on a 6 or an 8.
Additionally, once a number is established, I'll place $6 on the 6 & the 8 (unless one of those numbers is the established points). I'll press that wager 2x after it hits the 1st & 2nd time, then collect from there on past until the point is hit. Take the place bets down on the come out roll, then put them back out there again at whatever I previously had once a new number is established and repeat the routine. Occasionally I'll place a few come bets after a number has been established, but it always seems like that gets more significantly more than it rewards me.
Scale up your wagers based upon your initial bet, however money moves thru the game pretty quickly. Even at a $5 table, its not all that tough to be sitting with $50+ at any given moment. I don't generally like to go to the casino w/ anything more than $400, and usually don't cash in for more than $200 at any craps table at which point I'll find another game before hitting the rest of my cash. Its my comfort zone, at least for craps/blackjacks anyways, so if you're comfortable w/ a $5k bankroll, I'd go w/ a $25 baseline once you learn the game, and go from there.
Like I said, its a pretty conservative way to play the game, if the table goes on a roll, you can make a pretty good return, and it protects you a bit should the dice man roll into a number and crap out quickly before hitting points. Its a pretty safe way to learn if your disciplined, then make further bets once you've learned the game. On a hot table, placing come bets after a number has been established can make you a ton of money when placing odds behind it. That's probably the best place to be on the board with a mix of conservative betting and the chance to win big. Just stay off the middle, no matter how hot the table. The only time I go there is when I've got the dice and I'll throw a tip for the deal on all of the hardways. So in that sense, its no longer my money.
sitemail me w/ any more specific questions, and perhaps I can help you out. the dealers are generally friendly and follow the action better than you, but learn the payouts and pay attention, they're human and they'll make mistakes. Unless you're at the Irish casino in the middle of the strip in Vegas (the one w/ Guiness on tap), I'm pretty sure they were crooks and were consistantly shorting the payout. It only took a couple of turns of that trick before I decided it was best to move on. So much money moves on each roll, its easy to get lost, or forget to pay someone out, so just make sure you know when you're owed just in case. If you bet fairly consistantly like I do and tip occasionally, they'll be sure to watch out for you, let you know when you forgot to press a bet, or place odds, etc.. Best place in the casino, enjoy.
It can be a ton of fun, but be careful, like I said the money comes and goes quickly.
If you look online, you can find an electronic "craps" game that Radio Shack came out with a dozen years or so ago. It gives you a lot of practice. There are many great books (many of them are very old...so just don't stick with "recently" published works), and it is truly a game where intelligent playing can give you winning results.
I've played street craps only so don't have any idea what the pass or come lines are. But just to give you a quick idea of how the money/streaks can come in bunches and leave even heavier. When my friends and I were teenagers we played craps around the neighborhood amongst ourselves just nickels/dimes & quarters. I went on a streak one time where I won damn near every roll for a week straight, I was up over 225 dollars plus lots of items people gambled off, fancy dice, little custom dice bags and even other non dice related items heck I even won a small (very small) safe to keep all my winnings in. I was on fire, but faster than I won it all came crashing down. I played a friend on that 7th night and by morning I was broke and even lost quite a few of those items I had racked up as well. That streak gave me a false sense of security and though I was young I learned a valuable lesson, don't play if you don't wanna lose. I at least had the good sense to quit once what I had won was gone so I didn't go in the hole.

I was a craps dealer for over 20 years. My advice is much the same as the ones listed above. The number one problem people have learning the game is they try to learn too much at once. Just learn the pass line with odds and add the rest as you play. Once you know the pass line, you will also know the dont pass, the come, and the dont come. You wont know you know, but you will know.
Roulette is one of the worst games in the house for odds. Those of you who gamble in tribal casinos in numerous states should be aware, there is no state regulatory agency that dictates how much the slots must pay back like there is in Nevada.
I am curious what the average salary of a craps dealer is or even a black jack dealer? I am sure at the high end casinos it is pretty but what about locally at like the local riverboats?
