Cozart should be the Reds SS of Right Now. He can't be worse than Janish has been, and Paul can move into his true role as the new Juan Castro (who, amazingly, is still playing!)

Cozart could absolutely be worse than Janish. He has earned his shot, like most of the Bats lineup, but there are no guarantees with a player moving up to the majors. Just one month ago, Cozart was hitting .234. He's been hot for a while now but it is no indication of how he would do with the Reds.

As an example of lack of correlation between AAA and ML, remember how inept Hermida looked with the Reds? He leads this league in BA and OPS at .353/.956. There's a mental wildcard involved in a callup.

Zach will get his shot but be prepared for a step down in defense compared to Janish. But that says more about Janish than Cozart.

Yep. Agree 100%. I do think Zach will get his cup of coffee this year. Possibly soon if they end up DL'ing Renteria.

I don't get the griping for Janish though. His average plummeted when he came back early from the ankle injury, but he's got it going again right now. The Reds can most definitely carry his stick in the lineup when his D is that good. If we want to improve the offensive output of this team, LF & 3B are the places to do it...not short.
    2014 predictions:
99-63 WS champs (Cards take 2nd WC, Mil 3rd, Pit 4th, Chi 5th)
Bruce/Votto neck and neck MVP race (neither takes it)
    Bailey CYA winner
    Hamilton ROY & GG

I do not get all the blame on Janish. The Reds have been near the top of the majors in runs scored. Their problem is starting pitching. Most shortstops are going to help/hurt you more with what they do in the field than the impact of their batting average (again, Reds near the top of the majors in runs scored).

Reds are near the bottom of the league in starting pitching ERA. Any weakening of the team defensively is not going to help that.

Nothing against Cozart. He may or may not be a better player than Janish. Dusty obviously does not think he is at the moment. Either way, Janish is not the problem. He is a gold glove quality shortstop with a light bat. In a lineup that scores a lot of runs, you have bigger issues.

Amen, '72. The rotation has been the problem--not the shortstop. The numbers make that pretty clear. Just a thought, but maybe the Reds need a defensive upgrade in left field more than they need a shortstop who can hit.
