Overdrafts are common when you are looking to save.

"Look, we like you in the 3rd but we will make you a first rounder if you sign somewhere in the middle".

Joey Votto is a relevant example. Cincy took him as a supplemental but paid him 2-3 money, IIRC.

It would seem that if its the later case, it may be easier to sign them for less if theyre not really all that into school. Offer them something like mid to late 1st round money and they may eventually bite at the deadline rather than going thru school.

Bell sent out a letter to every MLB team stating that he has no intention of signing a contract and is going to play at Texas. Most speculation is that his mother, a college professor, doesn't want him skipping college. So unless some team is willing tho throw him a 6+ million dollar bonus (so basically Boston, New York or Detroit), he is going to college. Even with that big of a bonus he might not sign. Look for Detroit to take a chance with their first pick of the draft if he is still there (#76 or somewhere around there I think).

The guy I am intrigued by is Granden Goetzman, a 6'4 OF out of high school in Palmetto, Florida. Guys got the speed/power combination people love and I think, if available when we pick, would be a huge steal. He will probably be gone by then but just another name to look out for.

How about big Dan Vogelbach at 84?

6'1'' 240 lb. high schooler. Ruth-esque LH power and paunch. 17 HRs in 85 ABs this year.

1 tool player. Normally I'd have zero interest, but hey, this guy would entertain, and best-case he turns into a 40+ HR 1B in Great American, and would sell a lotta dollar hot dogs.

Could have the upside of Russ Branyan or the downside of Samone Peters. I'd give him a shot in the 3rd, probably not the 2nd.

Just saw a funny thing from yesterday. The Rays drafted Tyler Goeddel a third baseman who is 6-4, 170 lbs. His father is a biotech guy who helped develop HGH.

Obviously the kid doesn't use. Classic.

BA's blog explains the falls of some of the higher rated left on the board.

Bell (No. 15) and Norris (No. 16) both fell because of their perceived asking prices. Bell sent a letter to MLB teams telling him that he was planning to attend Texas and did not want to be drafted. Norris is a Clemson recruit.

The story is somewhat similar for catcher Austin Hedges (No. 28). Hedges is an excellent defensive catcher, but he's also a pretty firm UCLA commitment. Oregon State catcher Andrew Susac (30) is coming off of a broken hamate bone, but he has returned to game action recently.

Righthander Dillon Howard (31) is an Arkansas commitment. Lefthander Matt Purke (32) fell because he's missed part of the season with a shoulder injury. Texas A&M RHP Josh Stilson (23) and RHP Kyle Winkler (43) are facing injury questions that explain their falls.

I don't think it's on TV anywhere. You can follow it on MLB.com, they may have audio there

Maybe they took him because they know he won't sign? They can put in an offer, get rejected, and then have plenty of money to sign their #1.

Or spent all night speaking to his rep and got comfortable with what he/she told them.
