    Amir Garrett

    Well...this is pleasantly surprising.

Garrett was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 22nd round (No. 685 overall) of the baseball draft Tuesday, a result that should allow Garrett to play professional baseball during the summer and still honor his letter of intent to St. John's for basketball.
Darrow Garrett said his son is expected to sign with the Reds before the Aug. 15 deadline for teams to sign 2011 draft selections who have remaining college eligibility.

Sweet. Kid is a big-time project (embryonic secondary pitches), but you have to love the arm and athleticism.

Hopefully he signs before August so he can get to work. Kid will need all the development time he can get.

From a blog for the St. John's basketball program:

Garrett got back on the radar with pitching performances for scouts at the College of Southern Nevada under the watchful eye of Nick Aiello, their pitching coach. Aiello points out that Garrett is physically unique, gets a lot of leverage in his pitches, and is primed with potential.

The College of Southern Nevada is where Bryce Harper went for a year. Big-time CC program; tutelage from their pitching coach is probably good.

Google Amir Garrett and check out his basketball videos. Crazy athletic. Obviously could bulk up and add to that 90-94 fastball too.

Just tweeted that it looks like he'll be headed to Phoenix in a few days. I'm assuming Phoenix is Goodyear?
