Reds star 3B Heinie Groh made his first appearance of the season in this game after a long contract holdout, and OF Earle "Greasy" Neale, who had been traded to Philadelphia during the offseason for LHP Eppa Rixey, made his first appearance since being reacquired from the Phillies on June 2. Neale, who had also been a star football player for the Canton Bulldogs and Massillon Tigers, would be named head football coach at Washington & Jefferson College that fall and lead them to a 10-0 record and an appearance in the Rose Bowl, where they played to a 0-0 tie vs. the Cal Golden Bears. Neale eventually became the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, and won back-to-back NFL titles in 1948 and '49. Neale was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in Canton in 1969.
