    Pigeons

The Jays weren't the only birds on the field. Three pigeons roamed the infield together most of the game. At one point, Leake left the mound and tried to shoo them away.
We were at the game last night and it was the darndest thing I've ever seen. Three pigeons hung around the infield. They stayed within feet of active players for probably the first 6 innings.

I was thinking we were going to see a Randy Johnson-like event and a batted ball explode a pigeon. We named them Larry, Curly, and Moe.

Marty was describing their moves, as well as the theft (and his disgust of said theft) of a chair from the announcers booth.

Occasionally he mentioned the game on the field

I thought they were going to disrupt that amazing play by Phillips for a moment.

If the Reds were the Cardinals, they could blame the pigeons for the fact that they lost...

The game was over as soon as Leake messed with the birds.

Actually, no, they left the field right after Stubbs hit his inside the park home run. It looked like they really scattered as he rounded third and they were nowhere to be seen afterward.

I noticed that one of the times Leake chased them off was when the Jays finally got a runner on. It occurred to me that they were an invitation to distract him and cause a balk.

I was there as well, and it was rather odd. Grounds Crew should have removed them, as they could have disrupted play. Fortunately, they didn't.

I'd rather listen to Kelch read the phone book than suffer through Thom Brennaman's attempt to make every instance on the field the most important event since the discovery of manned space flight. -westofyou

At some point, we have to consider a LTC for the Pigeons.

There was a bird that wouldn't leave left center a few weeks ago, too. It just sort of sat there the first five innings or so.

It amazes me that players used to leave their gloves on the field when they batted. That must have disrupted play. Any stats or box scores show that?

I believe they stopped leaving the bats in front of the dugout to avoid injuries after a player got hurt.
