I always liked Davey. He got a raw deal by Marge.

I wish he were managing the Reds. A no-nonsense guy like McKeon. Baseball smart too. Unlike Dusty.

Think about the quality of managing the Reds had in a short period of time: Lou Piniella, Davey Johnson, Jack McKeon... good-to-great baseball men. All pretty much run off.

I know Marge cared deeply about the club (and I'm grateful in some ways) but she was clueless in so many ways.

I lived in the New York area at the time and got to watch a lot of the Mets games he managed in 86/87. He would do some really unconventional stuff like.

-The Mets had a Paul Janish situation where they had a good field/no hit SS in Rafael Santana. They were going through a hitting slump so Davey Johnson's answer to add a little horsepower to the lineup was to play Kevin Mitchell at short. (Yes, that Kevin Mitchell).

-The Mets had a good RH/LH bullpen combination with Roger McDowell and Jessie Orosco. I forget who they were playing but the team had a very difficult L-R-L-R batting combo coming up in the 9th. He put Jessie Orosco in to pitch and put Roger McDowell in LF. When Orosco got the lefty out he sent him out to LF and brought McDowell in to face the righty. McDowell got the righty out and he swapped them again.

I liked him. Wherever he went the team always improved with him at the helm.
