Knew that Hamilton was hitting better, but had not realized that his BA had crept up to . 240 all of a sudden. That's good news.
And, Torreyes. Wow. Not half bad, even for just a few weeks, for an 18-year-old at A ball. If Duran or Yorman had started the year like that, there would be about 14 threads dedicated to that...
Hard not to get excited about Torreyes when every time I look up it seems he has 2-3 hits. (I know it has been only a short time)
"When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail"
Of course those guys aren't 5 foot nothing and one hundred and nothing. Not that Torreyes can't be a good hitter, but it just isn't as sexy to talk about a guy when he projects to be a good average hitter without much power as it is to talk about a good hitter with power.
If all Torreyes can give is a 320/380/420 line, sign me up. Especially as a plus middle infield glove.
Nice job, camis. And, uh, good luck today. (Happens to me whenever I travel.)
Hamilton is beginning to hit. But his stock and trade will always be his speed. By the end of the year, Hamilton should be showing why Redszone was so high on him last year. He's gone 300/340/420 over his past ten games. While not great, it certainly shows promise, considering Hamilton is still learning how to switch hit. Add to that remarkable range and a strong, accurate arm (when he's throwing with his weight under him and not side-arming the ball) at the SS position and he's Elvis Andrus with more speed.
Torreyes may get his bat knocked out of his hand as he progresses, but scouts have raved about the power he generates despite his small stature. If he can slug in the 420-470 range (and, as he fills out, more power should come naturally to a bat that has shown a [short] history of slugging 450+) and continue to show the plus hit tool he's already exhibited, Torreyes could be a steal. His best tool-- a plus glove at a key spot on the infield-- makes him even more valuable.
Well said, scrap. Bottom line so far on torreyes is that he can hit. A lot. At some point, that starts to be more than a little intriguing.
I may be reaching, because Torreyes is fast becoming my favorite prospect, but it seems to me that his power might play right into the major leagues. The key is that he has the juice to get the ball into the gaps and down the lines. In his very limited, low-level time in the minor leagues, he projects to about 45 doubles and 18 triples (along with 7-8 HR) over a 162-game schedule. What that suggests to me is that he has enough power that the outfielders can't cheat and play him shallow, because if they do he'll shoot the ball by them and run like the wind. If so, his power is at least sufficient to ensure a continuing very high batting average. Theoretically.

The one thing that always resonates with me on Torreyes is that it seems everyone I talk to about him raves about his ability to put the barrel on the ball. Given that skillset, I don't think he is going to be a guy who we should worry about pitchers "knocking the bat out of his hand" so to speak. With small guys, if they have the bat speed to hit 90 MPH fastballs and they can barrel it up well, they can hit for solid power (more in terms of doubles/triples than HR's, but its still power).
