If the Reds put him on the Double-A roster in the off-season, which they won't do.

    Re: Post-2011 Rule Five Draft

High-upside guys close to the majors tend to have a good chance of getting drafted (unlike, for example, Danny Dorn, who's most likely at his peak). Mesoraco and Sappelt are givens; Lotzkar also definitely needs protection. Puckett, Soto, and Ravin may be worth looking at also.

Gullion would be tempting, but even with the propensity of some teams to steal prospects, I can't think of anyone who'd be willing to put a guy who hasn't even made it to A-ball on their major league roster for a full season. If we have an extra spot, I suppose he could fill it, but I'd rather have it open for a hot AAA player to have an easy path up to the majors.

One dark horse could be Travis Webb. I'm not saying they are going to, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

He played some catcher last year and 3B the year before.. He could very well play a few innings at both while also playing the majority of his time at 1B.

A year where Soto gets 50 ABs primarily pinch-hitting isn't a poor choice for a team that isn't going to contend. (Or even one that might.)

A lot of stock goes into how well players perform recently. If not for that, I doubt Kris Negron, Logan Ondrusek, Daryl Thompson (the second time), or Enerio Del Rosario would've been added to the 40-man roster when they were.

You don't think Logan deserves a 40-Man spot?

Of course not. I'm not saying any of those guys didn't deserve it. I'm simply saying that teams tend to be put a lot of stock in the most recent data.
