Ryan Vogelsong, 2011's most unlikely breakout player.

Many Reds fans might remember Vogelsong for being an NL Central punching bag for the Pirates in the middle of the last decade, peaking at a level of impressively bad with a 6.50 ERA and a negative WAR in 2004 in 133 innings. Well before this year he disappeared to Japan for 4 years in 2006. He is pitching in the MLB for the first time since then, replacing an injured Barry Zito in the San Francisco Giants' rotation. He's putting up these numbers.

    72.2 IP, 1.86 ERA, 2.88 FIP, 60 H, 2.35 BB/9, 7.06 K/9

One big thing with him so far is that he's apparently dramatically improved his command since being back from Japan, nearly cutting his walk rate in half from his average walk rates from his early MLB years.

So what's the deal here? He's obviously not going to continue posting a sub 2 ERA but do you think he's established a new level of performance here?
