Cubs reportedly nearing deal with lefty Maholm

CHICAGO -- The Cubs may be close to adding another left-hander to the rotation.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Monday that the Cubs were close to finalizing a deal for lefty Paul Maholm. He could join a rotation of Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad and Randy Wells. Wood is the only lefty.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Malholm was one I was hoping the Reds would target - either on a minor league deal or as a long man and emergency starter. I'd still target Aaron Cook on a minor league deal with an invite. Francis would be nice, but I believe he would require a rotation spot.

Cook signed a minor-league deal with the BoSox yesterday, $1.5MM prorated if he gets called up.

When was the last time a pitcher sported a sub-4.00 e.r.a. and had this few suitors? I know Maholm's peripherals are questionable, but I'm still surprised more teams haven't taken flyer on the guy.

No kidding. League averagish SP for $5MM? Since when?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I am guessing suitors were looking at his 2009-10 performance. He also didn't pitch after 8/17, so perhaps health is a concern. Apparently, no one wanting to pay for the chance that they buy the 2009-10 version.
