I would guess Mes is on there, and that would be it. Maybe Grandal.

Only one Red? Are we overvaluing our prospects?

The Cardinals have two - No. 7 and No. 18

    Me smart. :-)

I think Devin is being underrated here.

In the Insiders section, BA says that Daniel Corcino barely missed this list and he is a Top 100 prospect right now with the chance to be a Top 50 prospect by the end of the year. Track record is what kept him off.

I am a little surprised Alonso is not on the list. Grandal really should be on there too, although I would think he didn't miss by much.

Not sure we are overvaluing our prospects..... Mesoraco is clearly our best guy and I don't think its too close at this point. I would put Alonso, Corcino and Grandal all inside a Top 100 as well, but probably not top 50. If Grandal has a strong showing in AA the second half, I think he could move into that Top 50. Corcino is in a similar area for me, especially if he earns a promotion and does well. I think Alonso is going to hover in that 60-100 area unless he goes insane in the second half rather than simply does what he has been doing.

Just a reminder, Joey Votto showed up on BA's top 50 just once, at #43, just ahead of James Loney, Josh Fields, and Ian Stewart.

Guys without an elite skill that really sets them apart are rarely treated as elite prospects. BA tends to favor high ceiling guys over high floors, and Grandal is the latter. That said, name 5 major league catchers who can catch a good game and hit .280/.350/.450. If he could do that, Grandal would be a multiple-time all-star.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Votto was actually #43 and #44 in back to back years.

I don't think anyone is overvaluing guys like Alonso and Grandal. I really believe they deserve to be somewhere on this list.

Mildly surprised there hasn't been an appearance by the Dave Sappelt Fan Club on this thread. He's not a BA guy (unsexy pedigree and frame) but still...

Grandal, Alonso and Corcino all belong in the Top 100, and IMO are all borderline Top 50 guys at this point. Mez belongs in the top 10 on my list.

D'oh. Somehow I skipped 2008. Point still stands though. When Votto was 44, Josh Vitters was 43 and Jeff Clement was 42.

You don't need a high ranking to be a great pro. And being a top 50 guy is hardly a guarantee of success.

Inevitably, when you look back at a list like this, there will be guffaws.

My pet peeve is the overrating of Cubs prospects (editor Jim Callis is a Cubs fan). I have a real hard time believing Brett Jackson and Matt Sczcur are better prospects than everybody the Reds have except Mesoraco.
