Deadspin's "The Worst 100" baseball players of all-time

Some curious names on this list, not the least of which is former Reds' 1B Todd Benzinger.

It's dead-spin so certainly they had to make this an interesting list, but can't say I agree with the inclusion of some of these guys:

Sorry to see the 'bonehead' Merkle myth repeated so prominently.

Some weird choices, but the categories do that for you. No mention of Lemongello's head-first slide into a post-game banquet or Razor Shines trip into the stands to fight fans as a minor league manager.

Wow! Wily Taveras not only missed the 100 Worst, they don't even consider him the worst Taveras. Amazing!

Not really meant to be taken seriously- just a framing device for some of the writer's pet anecdotes- but any such list that doesn't include Casey Wise has no validity.

Actually, if you had nothing better to do, you could probably assemble a team out of those guys who could contend for a pennant.

Pretty good list- Oyler and Castro are there, but interestingly, not Hal Lanier.

I'm thinking about going by the name Tony Suck. Awesome.

I always try to remember that the worst player in baseball is probably the best player in his hometown.

Agreed. We may be nitpicking, but "Worst Major League Baseball Players of All Time" would have been my choice if I were the editor of that column

I sent the list to Westofyou, who's on vacation, and he caught this omission too.

I think Alex Trevino should be there. .979 career fielding percentage at catcher for a guy who couldn't hit and couldn't throw out runners by his 3rd or 4th year in the majors (yet he played for 13 seasons. The guy had one error for almost every 4 assists as a catcher (89 errors /398 assists).

By comparison, Johnny Bench in 17 seasons 97 errors / 850 assists.

You could also put Dal Maxvill on that list, though he did win a Gold Glove in 1968.

Maxvill is on the list at number 23.

Lots a players on that list that I had nearly forgotten about. Almost makes me wish I hadn't of clicked on the link.

The Reds had a 3rd baseman a few years back that should have been on that list. I think his name was Larson? I'm trying forget his name so I can't recall for sure.

Some other former Reds that could make that list:
    Junior Kennedy
    Paul Householder
    Rick Auerbach
    John Vukovich
Most any catcher in the years of 1982 to 1989. A few of the names are Bilardello,Van Gorder,Gulden etc....

It's just one of my pet peeves--I think Merkle was unfairly, uh, goated (hey, we are talking about the Cubs.) Check out this thread: 100th Merkle Anniversary
