You know, amid tons of stuff about how backwards and idiotically run our government is, there's quite a bit of brilliance in all of this.
In most of these areas where natural disasters hit, there are tons of Waffle Houses -- all it takes is one call to the Waffle House corporate offices and they can instantly give an assessment of which areas are without power, or where stores have been completely destroyed. You feed that data into a computer and it can basically map out where the hardest hit areas are and where to concentrate manpower and response teams.

Kind of weird for me. After 9/11 I was stranded in a cheap hotel in Phoenix with a Waffle House in the parking lot. I spent enough time in there those three days that I still associate Waffle House with the whole world-is-ending vibe.
