    Birthdays 8/5

    Reds:

Rick Mahler (58)- I have no room to talk, but I consider him one of the funnier-looking Reds of all time.

Bernie Carbo (64)- Famous for a number of things I don't need to recount here. He's had some rough spots since he retired, but he seems to have straightened things out in the past few years. Last I heard he was managing in a independent league; the thought of him managing must seem pretty funny to any of his former managers.

    Others:

    Carl Crawford (30)

    Mark Mulder (34)

    John Olerud (43)

    Dave Rozema (55)

Tommie Aaron- Played the same position on the same team as his vastly superior brother. Kind of like Jordan Palmer, but even more so.

Carbo was drafted ahead of Johnny Bench. Wasn't he Rookie of the Year around 1970? He will be forever famous for hitting that game tieing home run in game six of the 1975 World Series. I had started counting down the outs in Game six when he hit that HR. It was shocking to say the least. He was on the MLB Network when they were counting down the greates games of the last 50 years. Game 6 was number one,BTW. Carbo said he was shocked to be sent up to the plate in that situation. He thought for sure he was be replaced by another PH when Sparky brought in Rawley Eastwick. He even told Bench he couldn't believe he was hitting in that situation. He also said he had basically been on a big bender the previous three days during all the rain and said he really wasn't in any shape to be playing. Carbo had one of the worst swings imaginable on the pitch before his HR. Just barely fouling off a pitch to stay alive. After that the rest is history.

    I enjoy these threads.

Hard to believe Mark Mulder is only 34. It seems like he was pitching eons ago

Hate to be the bad news guy, but Rick Mahler died in 2005 at age 51.

I enjoy these threads though, chico.

    .
Whats interesting the 90' team has had 2 members die (Mahler and Layana).

The BRM which was 14 years before the 90' team has had zero players leave us.
