    Birthdays- 8/10

Reds: The only Reds players I could find born on August 10 were marginal turn-of-the century guys like Winfield Scott Hastings and the immortal Chink Heileman. Anyone who has any humorous anecdotes about these two, feel free to share...

    Others:

Rocky Colavito (78) -Still a folk hero in Cleveland.

Clint Hartung -"The Hondo Hurricane"; a big kid from Hondo, Texas who was thought to have superstar ability both as a hitter and a pitcher. What happened next is best summarized by his other listed nickname: "Floppy".

Buddy Lewis -Would have been one of the greats except for that pesky World War Two, plus he played most of his career in Griffith Stadium, which hid most of his power, as it did for Meyer, Kuhel, Goslin, etc.

Interesting that "Winfield Scott" was still used as a name at that time. The original Winfield Scott was a US Army general from the war of 1812, and General-in-Chief for many years, until early in the Civil War. He was also a presidential candidate in 1852. He was called "Old Fuss and Feathers" but I guess if Hastings was playing at the turn of the century, he may have been born in the 1870s or so, so I guess that Winfield Scott would have still been a well-known name.

OK, that's not a "humorous anecdote" and says nothing about the player, but that's all I've got.

Winfield Scott Hancock was one of the most illustrious generals on the Union side of the Civil War. So maybe Winfield Scott Hastings was named after Winfield Scott Hancock who was named after Winfield Scott.

Yeah - I didn't think of it that way.

Maybe we could add the name of Bob Porterfield a starting pitcher who enjoyed some success in the 50s with the Washington Senators. Won 22 games in 1953 for a 5th place team. I see his baseball card before my eyes, even as we speak.

I remember Colavito. Great outfield throwing arm.

Wasn't Winfield Scott the U.S. commander at the Battle of Veracruz in the Mexican War?
