    Question about Yasmani Grandal's Options

    All:

I heard Marty say recently that once a player is added to the 40 man roster, then they have three total options years in the minors remaining. Since Grandal signed a major league deal and was on the 40 man the day he signed, does that mean he MUST be on the roster year after next? He has used up two options (2010 & 2011) so he can be in the minors next season and after that never again?

    Thanks,

    Brisco

Re: Question about Yasmani Grandal's Options

A player must spend at least 20 days on an optional assignment for it to burn up one of his three options. Because there were less than 20 days left in the AZL Reds' season when he joined the team in 2010 (and because Grandal was called up to the major leagues once the season was over despite never putting on a uniform), Grandal didn't use up an option in 2010. Also, players that have less than five full seasons as a professional are eligible for a fourth option year. Therefore, Grandal won't be out of options until after the 2014 season.
