Banks charging a Debit Card Fee

Was watching a report that talked about banks starting to charge a $3 or $5 fee if you use your debit card at any point in the month.

I use USAA Bank online (everyone is eligible) it is GREAT. Once you realize that you can scan (or sometime take a picture of your check) to deposit it, you don't need your local bank ever again.

I bank with USAA also. I can deposit checks using my phone. They recently opened some financial centers outlets in the San Diego County, which helps out.

Banks are going to get more creative about fees.

Normally, the operating costs of a checking or savings account were subsidized by a zero or low interest rate on the balance. With market interest rates so low, that has been practically eliminated.

Oh, and what is this "check" thing you speak of?

Bank of America got rid of their no strings attached free checking account. Now it is something like $12 a month or you can switch to an "online only" account, which is free but if you use a bank teller for any transaction you incur the $12 fee for that month. Weird stipulations. I was able to have them return the first $12 charge to my account though, so so far I have not had to pay them any green.

I have used ING Direct in the past and been quite pleased with them. Now we use a credit union exclusively (our second one) and can't imagine going back to a traditional bank.

Another satisfied USAA bank customer here, in USAA's hometown. I've visited the mothership branch a few times and waited in the long drive-thru lines there. I love getting those ATM fees rebated each month!

I've had much better luck doing mobile deposits from my iPad than from my Android phone, FWIW.

Not only no fees with USAA, but if you get charged for an ATM, they put that money back in your account. (I think it's limited to $15 a month)

Comes in handy at the casino where they charge you $4.00 plus in fees.
