Reds Need to let Chapman Close Games NOW

You can't pay him this salary to be a set up man.

If he isn't gonna start, then he has to have the chance to close games

Why wouldn't you do it now......

The answer is Dusty doesn't want to hurt Coco's feelings.

It's a joke, your trying to develop a team that can compete for a World Series.

Giving him a chance to close now when the Reds are out of the race

makes way too much sense to do it.

I think it is definitely time to change and/or expand Champman's role.

Whether you agree on Chapman or not, there are a lot of things the Reds should be doing to find things out for next year. But they don't have a manager who will ever be on board with giving up on a season, no matter how much sense it makes.
FIRE DUSTY Never mind. The man is clearly a genius.

Why does it matter? Closers and setup men each pitch an inning in relief. Runs that score in the 9th don't count any more than runs in the 8th. I think the role of a closer has become overblown with the save stat.

Chapman's real value is a starter where he'll be pitching more innings at a time. If Walt/Dusty plan on using him as a closer (which I really hope isn't the case), pitching in the 9th vs. the 8th this year won't really affect his preparation for next year.

I think that Dusty wants to make sure Cordero passes Jose Mesa on the all-time saves list as soon as possible. After that he might be more open to using Chapman at the end. Stuff like this is why players like Dusty. Stuff like this is why more analytical observers are driven crazy by Dusty.

Right now I think Coco is the most reliable guy in our bullpen. That in itself is kinda sad, but oh well.

Chapman should be a starter next year.
