    Birthdays- 9/1

    Reds:

Steve Smitherman (33) Big OF, former 23rd round pick had a cup of coffee with the Reds in 2003.

Lance Davis (34) Lefty who came up to the Reds in 2001, was eventually released and fell as far as the independent Atlantic League. Eventually the Yankees and Tigers gave him shots, but he never made it back to the bigs.

    Others:

Garry Maddox (62) Best defensive OF ever? I can't think of anybody who was significantly better than Garry...

Rico Carty (72) Normally played the game with his wallet in the hip pocket of his uniform (he didn't trust the clubhouse staff).

Hub Pruett -I only mention him because of his nickname: "Shucks". You can't get a better baseball name then "Shucks Pruett". Not to be confused with Hub Perdue, "The Gallatin Squash".

Jim O'Rourke -Known as "Orator Jim" for his flowery way of speaking. One of those Hall of famers thatno one remembers.

Maddox was one of the best. He anchored CF for those good Phillie teams of the 70's. He originally came up with the Giants who had a bunch of good OF prospects back then. He along with Gary Matthews and Bobby Bonds were a terrific OF trio for the Giants who eventually traded them all away for some reason.

Wasn't Smitherman the guy with Type I diabetes? Great story, IIRC. Shame he couldn't have a big league career.

    I found this about Maddox...interesting.

Maddox was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 1968 amateur draft. Maddox missed two seasons due to his service in the U.S. Army during the 1969 and 1970 seasons. Exposure to chemicals in Vietnam left his skin highly sensitive, and he has worn a full beard ever since to protect his face

Why don't we add Cloyd Boyer, 84? He pitched for the Cardinals from 1949 to 1952...older brother of Ken and Clete, also major leaguers, of course...he was pitching coach during Bobby Cox's first term as manager of the Atlanta Braves. A memorable first name.
