    Heisey's Stats

If you prorate Heisey's stats (218 ABs) into the number of ABs Jay Bruce has (491 - 4th most starts for a Reds everyday player), they are as follows: .252 AVG., 29 HR, 83 Runs, 92 RBI, 11 SB, .778 OPS .

That is good enough to lead the team in HR, RBI and 3rd in runs, and 2nd in SB. Say what you want, but I think fans need to think twice before saying the Reds need a LFer.

Overall AB HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
    Total 218 13 41 15 60 5 1 .252 .310 .468 .778
    vs. Left 40 1 8 2 15 0 0 .225 .279 .375 .654
    vs. Right 177 11 30 13 45 5 1 .254 .313 .469 .782

When I looked up his stats I expected to see he had an unusual number of AB's against lefties & he feasted on them --- some much for that theory

My thoughts, also. I stated in a previous thread that an OF of Stubbs, Heisey, and Bruce would/could set a MLB record for K's in a season. I see no better option at this point, however, unless you continue to give Sappelt a shot. He still hasn't convinced me that he's the answer though. I know: "They're young. Give them time." But, when do they quit being young and start improving on their K problem?

    Likely never.

I think some or a lot of the strikeout problems have been Dusty's philosophy of hitting. I think it is something a long the lines of look for 1 pitch and rip it. He doesn't emphasize patience. The good thing is that the Reds score a lot of runs, but it seems like a new hitting coach could play big dividends. It would take a lot to fix Stubbs, but with Heisey you are only looking at 400+ major league ABs. The pitch he hit out yesterday was a pitch that I have seen him strikeout on several times.

In 491 ABs he would have 135 Ks, 3 more than Bruce for 2nd on the team. Votto is 3rd on the team (40th in the league) in K's with 101, Johnny Gomes is 4th on the team with 74 (prorated to 167 if given 491 ABs). Gomes would be 2nd in the league in K's if you prorated his stats. Says something about the Reds hitting philosophy.

Another note, it took Washington less than 1 month to learn what the Reds couldn't in two years. He is a bench player.

Another note, the Reds are 8th in the league in K's. To me I am surprised they are not first. But if you look at the team, Brandon Phillips only has 65 K's despite being 2nd on the team in ABs and the catchers combined for 70, and Rolen only has 36. Other than Hanigan, those are the players that didn't come up in the Reds system. So to me most of the K problem is coaching or better said philosophy. I don't think Heisey, Bruce, or Votto would be King as much with a different hitting coach or philosophy.

the reds have no philosophy other than do nothing or the same thing each year, that is why their players dont improve
