The real headline is that the Mets look like they're going to be forced to cut their payroll back to the $100mm to $110mm range, which is going to be difficult given the amount of money they have tied up in Johan Santana, Jason Bay, David Wright and potentially Jose Reyes.

Given that Santana and Bay are completely unmovable, it would seem that the Mets are going to be forced with choosing between keeping Wright or Reyes going forward. While it is possible (and even likely) that the Mets may allow Reyes to walk, this seems like an excellent opportunity to try to pry Wright away at a discounted price.

While Wright would be an expensive addition ($15m) and would have the ability to void the club option for 2013 if he is traded, he'd address the team's weakness at 3B and add a RH middle of the order bat to hit between Votto and Bruce.
