    Reds Magic Number 2011

Last year's thread worked out pretty well. We won't discuss prior efforts

    162

161 to eliminate the Brewers and Cardinals

Wouldn't it be 160 to eliminate the Brew and Cardinals and 161 for the Pirates and Cubs?

yea, but that would still keep the magic number at 161.

No I think it starts at 163 because the total of wins and opponent losses must exceed games remaining. The win and St.L and Mil losses move it from 163 to 161.

    From Fox sports
    CENTRAL
    Code:
    	Reds 1	0	1.000	0.0	1-0	0-0	1-0	W1	-
    	Cubs 0	0	.000	0.5	0-0	0-0	0-0	-	162
    	Astros 0	0	.000	0.5	0-0	0-0	0-0	-	162
    	Pirates 0	0	.000	0.5	0-0	0-0	0-0	-	162
    	Brewers 0	1	.000	1.0	0-0	0-1	0-1	L1	161
    	Cardinals	0	1	.000	1.0	0-1	0-0	0-1	L1	161

I believe the number is a lot less. We know the Reds play a great number of games against the central competition. So if the Reds won 155 games, wouldn't that automatically mean that the Reds already won a few games against each NL Central teams

For example the Reds play the Brewers 16 times. So if the Reds have won 155 games, that means the Reds beat the Brewers a minimum of 9 games already. Correct?

You also count the losses of the other team as well as your teams wins so when the Reds beat the Brewers it knocks two off of the number.
    Here is an explanation
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_(sports)
The magic number is calculated as G + 1 − WA − LB, where
G is the total number of games in the season
WA is the number of wins that Team A has in the season
LB is the number of losses that Team B has in the season

This site keeps track of the magic number that takes into consideration the head to head matchups remaining. Its not always updated in a timely fashion until later in the year, but its nice to see the more accurate number.

Good luck finding a picture of any former Red wearing 161 or 160.
    Hope isn't a strategy
