Like, say, a team in a very small market with a horrible economy that can't sell out games even when they are in the thick of the playoff hunt and where the county is desperately trying to come up with a solution to avoid its obligations under the team's stadium lease?

    Re: The 2011 Jags

So here's what went down best we can tell. There had been many rumors that a Jags sale was in the works, but the name that had been bandied about was Fred Smith of Fedex. Turns out now that maybe Smith was acting as the go between for Khan.

Apparently Weaver would have fired Del Rio after the coaching fiasco in Cleveland if he had not been tied up in these negotiations. He extended the GM for 3 years. The GM (Gene Smith) had (according to Pete Prisco) a relationship that had been deteriorating with Del Rio. He had turned down an extension earlier in the year. But once he knew what was going down with the new owner and Del Rio, he agreed.

Wayne Weaver is almost universally revered in town as the man who would not turn his back on the city. When they were awarding franchises in 93(?), the NFL tried for 2 weeks to have Weaver abandon Jax for St Louis.

And when they were talking about the change of ownership today, Weaver said he got lots of calls from LA, but he would never talk to them. He has every faith that Khan is committed to Jacksonville.

So.... If the glass is half full, we have a new owner committed to Jax, a new coach in the works, a GM we still (mostly) have faith in under contract for 3 years, a solid young defense, and a ton of room under the cap for next year.

Prisco seems to think that Jeff Fischer will want the Chargers job, and the 2 names he thinks are highest in the mix for Jags are Jay Gruden of Bengals and Joe DeCamillas of Dallas.

Can't see Mike Brown letting Gruden talk to Jacksonville, may force his hand to move Marvin upstairs. Gruden does fit the profile in what Jacksonville is looking for young and cheap coach who has some FLA name recognition and talent.

Jacksonville is in a pretty iron clad lease until 2027. Only way they can get out of it is if they show they have been losing money for the past three seasons.

They're on MNF with 10000 tickets left and the upper deck all tarped. 4 years of Gabbert might do it.

    Re: The 2011 Jags

I lived there for several years. The team was well supported then. Boring + mediocre + bad economy is not a good equation for a small-market team... remains to be seen if things will get better.

The tarping of upper deck sections didn't bother me. If the Jaguars had their way in the beginning, the remodeled stadium would have had about 65,000 seats, consistent with the "less is more" approach to NFL stadiums recently used in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Nashville etc. The rest of the seats are there because of the Florida-Georgia game. Only a few teams could consistently fill 76,000 seats year after year, and obviously Jacksonville isn't one of them.

Scratch that, Brown has no say in this if the coach is making a vertical move. Jay Gruden and Zimmer getting lots of pub though as sought after assistant coaches.

    Re: The 2011 Jags

Well, been a month since I posted. And for good reason.... The season went on hold once the firing of Del Rio occurred and the sale was announced. The sale takes place Wed, and coaches can be hired Monday. So next year starts this week in Jax.

There is much enthusiasm over Khan as the owner, as a guy who is going to be more aggressive in wanting a winner. And lots of looking forward to a new coach. We have tons of cap room and a returning very good defense, and a high draft choice.

We just can't wait for the offseason to start.
