Pirates collapse - just how bad has it been?

I think we all agreed back in late June and early July that the Pirates' pitching staff was due for some serious regression...but holy cow, it's been a lot worse than I thought it'd be.

16-40 since July 25th is unreal...and apparently historic.

In the modern history of Major League Baseball that began in 1900, no team has fared worse than these Pirates after holding first place through 100 games. Actually, no team has even come close. The Pirates' 16-40 record down the stretch makes for a .286 winning percentage. Next-worst was the 1977 Chicago Cubs, who went 60-40 to lead their division through 100 games, then went 21-41 for a .339 winning percentage.

My father is a lifelong Buccos fan. This season has featured both the happiest he's been since the early 90s and the most despair.

    No, not everyone agreed:

Another team that's completely disappeared after getting their fans all excited is the Indians. A lot of it, of course, has been the ridiculously hot play of the Tigers. But I kept telling Indians fans all summer that they wouldn't come close to winning the division and I kept getting shrugged off and dismissed. I can't say that I didn't enjoy their freefall.

Worse for the Indians is the fact that they overpaid for Ubaldo hoping he would put them over the top. That's a deal that could really haunt them come 2013-2014.

Pirates fans had some fun this year. Probably more than Reds fans.
Maybe that's as good as it gets.

BTW, if not for the Buccos, the Reds might have been better this year. Reds have won 3 of 13 against them. Take away that 3-10 poor showing and the Reds would be 73-71. If the Reds had won just 7 of those 13 games, they would be 80-77.

Yep, they crashed and burned, but as we saw tonight, they own us in 2011.

    Own us BIG TIME!

The Pirates may have collapsed (22 games back); but as far as I'm concerned, so did the Reds (16 games back). The Pirates just fell a little farther then us that's all.

Agree. They had a bigger taste of success than the Reds did this season, so that must make their collapse all the more painful to fans.

IMO, the Reds collapse began in June when the team had that month-plus stretch of being unable to put together two wins in a row. It wasn't as dramatic as a losing streak, but it included plenty of painful losses. It felt like they were knocked to the mat, sat up and have been repeatedly knocked back down from that seated position ever since.
