If you win today's 162nd game to clinch the division, your reward could be playing your first playoff game in Arlington against the Texas Rangers if Oakland wins again today.
Congratulations!

I really want to see this happen but the Orioles would have to win tonight, too, right?
No, if the Yankees win tonight, they clinch the #1 seed and the O's are a WC no matter what else happens. Whoever wins tonight's A's-Rangers game wins the west and plays the Tigers in the ALDS while the loser plays the O's in the WC game. The OP is addressing the fact that, if the A's win tonight and the Rangers win the WC game, the #1 seed Yankees will be "rewarded" by having to travel to Arlington to play the Rangers for game 1 of the ALDS.

The As and Orioles may take the division from the Rangers and Yankees. I wonder what the odds of that would have been at the beginning of the year.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Just to be clear, I said tonight earlier, but the Rangers and A's game is this afternoon at 3:35.

What the Yankees have going for them is the Red Sox mostly quit on this season a month ago. Don't expect the Yankees to encounter a lot of resistance tonight.
