I liked it. Those days in Hamburg, as rough and wild as they were, is what tightened the boys up as a band.

I use to have a VHS copy of this movie called "Two of Us", which was a fictional account of what might have gone down between John and Paul during an historic 1976 meeting at the Dakota which took place the day of the famous Saturday Night Live plea to get the group back together. It was worth the watch. Need to find it on DVD.

Thanks, that sounds like something I'd be interested in watching myself. I'll have to see if I can find a digital copy of it.

Though Backbeat didn't really deal with this aspect, I've been thinking a lot about what it must have been like for Pete Best to go through being kicked out only to see them become an instant worldwide sensation overnight. I read he was suicidal for a period of time, and I can imagine how difficult that would have been for him.

Well let's not get carried away. I assume that Brian Wilson song about good vibrations qualifies as a pop song. I wouldn't argue with "What's Going On" or "Be My Baby" either.

I saw parts of it and never realized the extent to which he was such a creative force. Very interesting profile for somebody who mostly thought of him as a "backup" guy on the Beatles and associates him with his mid-80s cover of Got My Mind Set on You.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

a little off the thread track, but thanks for bringing up these 3 songs. i have them all on 45 r.p.m.s you're right. "good vibrations", popwise, may be hard to beat.

but, emotionally speaking, the ronettes' "be my baby" grabs hold of me the tightest...i'm right back in the good and bad of h.s.

the middle of the other night while mr. insomnia wrestled with me, i heard a long, wonderful piece, narrated by smoky robinson on the bbc world service about the making of marvin gaye's "what's going on" album..my, my, my.

back to thread business, i remember while a couple of my friends and i couldn't get enough of john and paul, one friend's older sister was totally taken by "the quiet beatle", george. beautiful, talented george.

I just signed up on Amazon for an email notice when it's available on DVD. Supposedly it was to be released on DVD on Oct. 10th.

But anyone who said George had an inside track.
Anyone who said Ringo was automatically disqualified.

It's obvious that Ringo - good ol' affable Ringo - was the least talented of the four; but from 1970-1973 he had more chart success than the other Beatles, including 7 straight Top-10 singles in a row.

I love "It Don't Come Easy" and "Photograph".

And who can forget this classic? LOL
