Well, dont' forget those teams actually made moves to improve at the trade deadline. We did nothing. So what was our record vs them after July 31st?

We did nothing because we weren't a contender period, you could have argued the Reds failed to ditch contracts. When you are a below average team well into the end of July the party is over unless you get a late 90's Rangers situation.

they also improved their teams before the season and at the deadline.. sadly Walt and Bob were blind to the obvious issues and lets Pray they dont make that same mistake this off season!! Losing and no playoff wins doesnt sell 3 million tickets..

The Reds woke up on the morning of July 25th a grand total of 3 games behind both the Cards and the Brewers. One of whom is going to the World Series. But the Reds weren't contenders in late July. Okay.

^^^ This, this, and THIS! I think I just got a little sick after realizing how we were in 1st for a while from the division that is going to produce the NL Pennant winner.

The Reds may have been in contention but that was due to the overall mediocrity of the division until August 1st. It only would have taken one hot stretch for the Reds to have taken control over the division during the summer and they couldn't do it. It's impossible to reel off long winning streaks when you only have 2 1/2 legit starters for the whole year.

Arroyo/Volquez/Wood/Willis/Maloney all had ERA's over 5 as a starter, that's 60% of the starts made this year. A deadline deal for a starter like Doug Fister or Edwin Jackson could have stabilized their rotation enough to have kept them in it. You don't have to always go for the grand slam move to keep your team motivated.

why do something when the media and fans are passive, keep trotting out uselss arroyo and volquez and retread garbage like willis rather than preemptively strike

Sorry, but "3 games" turned into 6 games by the deadline. Huge turn of events that changed things heavily. As we suspected, the team was a never has been.

You can try to spin it any way you want but the fact of the matter is they were 3 games back near the end of July. That makes you in contention. There is no rule in baseball that states that you have to wait until the trading deadline on July 31st to make a deal. And even six games backs with two months to play is hardly an insurmountable lead. I do believe two teams overcame deficits larger than that with less than a month to go in the season to make the playoffs. If a team is 3 games back on July 25th they are in contention. If a team is 6 games back on July 31st they are still in contention. Whether you choose to acknowledge that fact or not.

Again, there is nothing to spin. The Reds were dead. The team wasn't good enough. I don't play "what if" games with the 2011 Reds. They just weren't good enough. Trading for veteren fluff would have meant a wasted resource you can't get back. Lets say we lose Stephenson because of those trades. Which costs the Reds a shot at a true ace 2 years from now?

    Isn't that "what if" game?

The Reds weren't out of contention at the end of July.

Yes, they were. We can argue to the end of time, but they were done. By July 31st, they had fallen to 6.5 back of a red hot Brewers club that finally got it together. It was why the Ludwick style of trade wasn't made. Instead they went for guys like Pence and Jimenez who were tough gets.
