This is bad.

The last thing I want is to be in the division with them with somebody competent making the moves.

this is a good hiring for the cubs payroll will be boosted and now i can see maybe pujols going to the cubs.
......but they are still the Cubs.
How big an icon would Epstein be if he lead both the Red Sox and the Cubs to their first world championship in nealy a century?
That said, his payroll in Chicago won't be what it was in Boston, and it won't be as easy to cover over some of the bad signings.
Sto Pro Veritate
Change will happen but it will take a couple of season. No way Albert ends up in Chicago
Cubs had $134M payroll in 2009, $144M payroll in '10, and $134M payroll in '11.
Red Sox had a $122M payroll in 2009, $168M (highest ever) payroll in 2010, $163M payroll in 2011.
I don't like this move, for the Reds. Competent GM with big payroll in Central Division could be a problem.
I do like this move in terms of Pujols. I see the Cubs outbidding anything the Cards put out there for AP.
IMO, Fielder is the better purchase for the Cubs. Fielder has more good years left, even though his good years aren't as good as Pujols'. While the Cubs wait for some of their bad contracts to expire, they won't be able to be as competitive. So why not go with the player who will still be good when Soriano is finally off the books.
But yea, it sucks having Epstein in the division if he has around $140 mil. Anyone think we can pry away Andrew Friedman from the Rays?
No chance Albert ends up in Cubs blue, Cards will match anything they offer. Theo is going to need at least 2-3 years just to clean up the mess that is the Chicago Cubs.
Theo to Cubs, Just another bad contract by the cubs. He'll put together A team full of overpriced egos, with a bad locker room, and a sub .500 record.
If Theo REALLY wanted to prove he is all that and a bag of chips, he would try getting the Pirates into the World Series.
And, if Theo wins in both cities, despite virtually unlimited payrolls, most will declare him a future Hall of Fame executive.
Tell me, what THEN would keep Bob Howsam from being inducted into the Hall? Was he not the architect of two different World Series winning ball clubs?
I think it will be Prince, he's younger, and a better fit long term. IMHO.
Bowled 12, 300 games, I'm BACK!!
Bowling a 300 game never gets old
The Cubs are one of the top 5 wealthiest teams. They have the money, they just don't know how to spend it. Castro will be strong with another year under his belt and if they sign Prince, they could all be back in the hunt again.
