    Birthdays- 10/28

    Pretty slim pickings today...

    Reds:

Juan Guzman (45) A Red in 1999. His career postseason record: 5-1 2.44 ERA.

Lenny Harris (46) -Baseball's career pinch-hit leader; currently hitting coach for the Great Lakes Loons.

    Others:

Bob Veale (76) -Fireballing lefty whose 276 Ks in 1965 is still a Pirates franchise record. At one point, Pittsburgh had a Veale, a Moose and a Lamb on their pitching staff.

Joe Page -One of listed nicknames is "the Gay Reliever". Try getting away with that nowadays...

Doc Lavan came by his nickname the old-fashioned way- he earned it be actually being a practicing medical doctor. He was also a shortstop for both the Browns and the Cardinals (He held the Cardinal season record for RBIs by a shortstop for 80 years). He's probably best remembered for suing Browns owner Neal Ball for slander when Ball suggested to the press that some of the Browns players were laying down on the job.

Lavan served in both world wars, and is one of the few major league players buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
