I've always liked Maholm. If they could somehow dump Arroyo and his salary on another team, I wouldn't mind a Maholm signing, as long as it was for less money than Arroyo.

They also cast Brandon Wood adrift. He being, at one time, the missing Reds SS of the future.

The Angels' handling of him should be a cautionary tale to not overly hoard your prospects. They could have gotten great value for him at one point.

Hindsight. Note that they currently have a hole at 3B. Wood profiled as a great fit there. They gave him a fair share of major league time, hoping he'd be the answer, and he failed miserably. Teams do not necessarily know what their prospects will do at the major league level.

    Didn't Maholm have a sub-4.00 e.r.a., but with a losing record?

Geez. The Pirates really are super cheap.

Someone will pick up Maholm. Pirates simply declined the option on his +$9M salary for next year.

It's a good call by the Pirates. His innings have declined every year since 2008 and he throws in the 87 mph range now. He's useful to someone's backend of the rotation but not to the Pirates at $9m.....

Doesn't change Beni's point. And it wasn't hindsight. Angels could have dealt him for a huge return multiple times, didn't. Left him to molder in AAA, let the bloom come off his prospect rose, and then found out he couldn't really play in the bigs.

    Hence, the cautionary tale.

Sounds like some of the Reds prospects.

    FTFY

Player evaluation will always be what makes or breaks a GM. Pirates had to let Maholm walk at that price. Paying full market value for a 2.1 fWAR player (assuming he can repeat 2011, which seems likely) will not work for a mid market team.
