Here's where we'll keep track of the latest minor moves...

The Reds signed outfielder Daryl Jones, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America (on Twitter). The 24-year-old former third round selection posted a .260/.360/.400 line for the Cardinals' top affiliates in 2011.

Re: The Reds signed outfielder Daryl Jones per MLB trade rumors.

Jones was among the Cards top prospects a few years back (#4 in Nov 2009 by BA, behind Shelby Miller, Jaime Garcia and Lance Lynn). Was also rated their Top Athlete. He's put up solid walk rates, but few SB and HR. Seems like a nice guy to have in the organization, but we shouldn't expect very much.

With a downright awful 2010, Daryl Jones continues to be one of the more frustrating prospects in St. Louis’ system. What at times has been seen as a toolsy, athletic, above-average corner outfielder, is starting to look like an average fourth who doesn’t have the outfield instincts to stay at center, the arm for right, or the power for left.

Jones, an extremely athletic three-sport athlete in high school, was selected in the third round of the 2005 draft. After struggling to translate his tools to results in his first full two years of pro ball, Jones broke out in 2008, posting a .316/.407/.483 line with Palm Beach, and Springfield.

While he did hold on to a steady 21.5 LD% in 2009, his first full attempt at AA was hampered by a quad strain, and he’s never been the same since. While Jones has never been expected to hit for plus-power with his linear swing, he hasn’t even been capable of posting average power numbers lately, topping a .400 SLG in just one of his past nine months of ball. In ’10, his LD% trailed off to 19.7%. With a .292 BABIP, Jones posted a park-adjusted line of .241/.332/.345.

I had previously thought that if Jones could carry his success from ’08, and the first half of ’09, he could have a legitimate shot at earning a spot with the big league club in the 2011 Spring Training. That appears to be a long-shot now. And while Jones is still just 23-years-old, this stunt in progression is startling, and something to note, in my opinion.

What say you, readers? Is the injury still hampering him? Is it too early to give up on a 23-year-old? Has your projection of his upside been changed considerably with his awful ’10 season?
And from Baseball Scouting Report in Jan 2010:
    Code:
    Daryl Jones, OF
    5-11, 180
    B/T: L/L
    Games seen: 2, Innings: 15

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Slight built, average height, loose and athletic, not very bulky.

STRENGTHS: Fast hands, keeps bat level and in hitting zone for a long time, hits off firm front, handsy, above-average speed, makes solid contact.

WEAKNESSES: Below-average arm strength, hands need to become softer in outfield, defensive footwork needs to continue improving.

SUMMARY: Two plus tools, contact and speed. Classic Cardinal top-of-the-order type. Needs to play CF or LF.

    GRADES (Present/Future):
    Hit 45/60
    Power 40/50
    Run 60/60
    Arm 40/40
    Field 40/60
    Overall Future Potential: 54

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Does anyone think Daryl Jones will contribute for the Reds this year? What does he project to be? Is he a 4th or 5th outfielder etc?

Is this a minor league deal or a major league deal? Does Jones go on the 40 man roster?
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Perhaps a Chris Dickerson like player here with a weaker throwing arm. Good athlete, has some solid tools.

Strictly a minor league deal. Doesn't have any impact on the Reds plans

Savafan I am not sure if its a minor league deal or not. If not on 40 man roster would he be rule V eligible and how many option years left for him? Thanks for the info dougdirt.

Well, he's only 23. Plenty of time to figure it out. Maybe this will be a wake up call. Maybe he purposely struggled because he feared having to play for Tony Larussa?

    Cincinnati Reds
Signed: C Corky Miller (re-signed), OF Daryl Jones
The Cardinals had high hopes for their ’05 third-rounder Daryl Jones, but the athletic outfielder stalled at Double-A with too little range or instincts for center and too little power for a corner. The 24-year-old batted .263/.353/.389 over 1,168 plate appearances for Springfield, where he spent the bulk of the past four seasons

It's a minor league deal. And I would guess that he is eligible for the Rule V draft. He has two options left if he's added to the 40 at some point.

If a team had an interest in him he would have been grabbed when he was Free Agent

I remember this guy was supposed to be the next best thing in the Cardinals organization. I don't know what really happened to him. He always seemed like a guy who was on the verge of breaking through the lower ranks of the Cards system but just seemed never to put it together. I wish the Reds good luck in trying to get him to make the best of his talent.

Yabbut, this is the most important signing.

How long till he's a coach?
