    Birthdays: 11/12

    Reds:

Mike Leake (24) -Trivia question: Before Mike, who was the last player to go directly from the draft to the majors?

Jeff Reed (49) -Will always be remembered for catching Tom Browning's perfect game.

Joe Hoerner -A Red reliever in 1977, at the end of a fine career. In 1968, he became the first player to have a base hit in the World Series without having one in the regular season.

    Others:

Sammy Sosa (43) -Only Hack Wilson drove in more runs in a season.

Carl Mays -Remembered for the pitch that killed Ray Chapman. By all accounts, not a very nice man.

Moonlight Graham -Of "Field of Dreams" fame. His brother was a United States senator.

Answer to trivia question: Xavier Nady

Carl Mays pitched 15 seasons with only 1, 1923, with an ERA+ below 100. He pitched for the Reds from 1924 to 1928. In 1926 he lead the NL with 24 complete games and 0.1 HR/9 in 281 IP. His career ERA+ was 120. He won 20 games 5 times including a 20-9 record for the 1924 Reds. He didn't get many K's (career K/9 of 2.6) but only gave up 70 HR in over 3000 IP (.2 HR per 9 ininings). He walked 2.2 batters per 9 iinings in his career. As a Red his ERA+ was 116 in just over 700 IP.

He relied on his defense and today many would not like him because of the lack of K's, but I wish the Reds had some one as good as him now.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Ah, yes, Field of Dreams! I find it hard to imagine how anyone can pick any other baseball movie over this one as 'the best ever' choice.
