the funky calls from game to game are more a result of funky nfl "safety" rules than poor officiating. The poor refs have an impossible job to make the distinctions that the rules require. Then throw in replays in hd and they look incompetent. The helmet to helmet rule is good intentions but entirely impractical for the way the game has to be played.

I don't think the safety rules are any more difficult to see than the regular rules. Some officials are over-zealous and eager to throw flags. They love the attention it gets them. They want to be in the spotlight and enjoy using the power they are given as enforcers of the rules. Some of them abuse it.

It is impossible to see something that did not happen. If the defender did not hit the receiver helmet-to-helmet then it is impossible to see it. The ref threw the flag because he either anticipated the foul or because he inferred the violation from the reaction of the players. Either way it is terrible officiating. Don't throw the flag if you did not actually see the foul. It is that simple.

Throwing the flag for a foul that never happened is far worse than missing a foul because you didn't see it. You can't see every foul, that is just reality. But throwing flags for fouls you did not actually see is dishonest and incompetent.

I liked the face mask late in the game, by a Raven, with an official standing RIGHT THERE and never called. LOL

And I see the Bengals beating Houston. I know they've ran through some QBs, but regardless, they have not played well this past month.

Because that's how you get change. Were it not for the reaction of the fans, we'd likely still have Bob Bratkowski. Mike fired him belatedly last off season

I don't know what funky calls have to do with missing blatant blocks in the back (Pitt game) or the PI on the last play of the Ravens game. Supposedly calls even out but I never remember such obvious, critical calls going our way

When there is consistency on "roughing the passer," it will be the first time. When you see inconsistency in applying a rule, that is evidence that the rule is too subjective. Maybe they should put special stripes on the QBs, one on the shoulders, the others just above the knees, any hits above or below is a penalty. Sound ridiculous? Just like the rules.

The next rule for QBs will be that a defender will get penalized for having his helmet in the area of the passer because they keep hurting their little handies when they try to pass.

Speaking of 'bad calls,' while there may have been a lot of them against the Bengals (or non calls) I thought the 'missed' PI in the endzone toward the end was a good non-call. I'm tired of DB's constantly getting called for PI's when WR's are just as physical in this league.

If I'm going to take the Bengals seriously, they need to win Sunday and not back in to the playoffs. And if they make the playoffs, I'd like to see them succeed against a team other than the Texans and their 3rd string QB.
By the way, the Pats are in that boat this year. They didn't beat anyone who ended up with a winning record.

If they let calls like that go, there'll be no more completed passes in the NFL. He was being pulled down by the jersey before the ball got there. DBs can break up passes all day if they're allowed to do that.

I do agree with you that offensive PI isn't called enough. Receivers pushing off after their cut is rarely called. I also see guys blocking downfield on WR screens before the ball is caught

The greatest compliment you can give an official is that they went unnoticed. Too many NFL officials want to get them selves noticed (I am looking at you Ed Hochuli) who I even think is a pretty good official. Make the call, no dramatics, and move on from there. I especially despise when an official gets emotional in a game (happens a lot in college basketball). You didn't make a great play, you just were on the field looking at the play to make sure a penalty wasn't committed.

While I am on my mini rant, do away with defensive holding. Its a joke the way it is officiated right now. Make everything pass interference. Make it either a spot foul within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage or a 15 yard penalty after 15 yards. Too often a bad PI call changes the complexion of the game and the line that differentiates PI and defensive holding is way too small.

I think the rules are weighted way too far for the offense right now hence all the passing records now being set. A start to evening that playing field would be to eliminate the automatic first down on defensive holding.

Another idea is to eliminate the out of the pocket grounding. This is more problematic as this is a rule designed to save QBs from getting hit hence I doubt that'll change

Re: 2011 Bengals Discussion Part II

To me, it seems that PI calls have gone like fouls in the NBA, i.e. no blood, no foul.

There seems to be an awful lot of handchecking and pulling and grabbing that is done both by the DB and WR that prevents hands getting to the ball.

I think the no-contact-after-5-yards is a joke. They could call it on every play. At least extend it to 10 yards.

And I think PI should be like college and have it be a 15 yard and a 1st down penalty. Too many times there is a ticky-tack PI call that is as good as a 40 yd. bomb and that is too much of a grievous penalty.

Since this is a Bengals thread, I think they have a good shot at Houston. But with Houston's running game, the Bengals need to figure out what why Ray Rice gashed them for so many yards. To me, it looked like Maualuga got sealed off repeatedly and the Bengal OLBs were just non-existant. And the DL was non-existant as well with lots of arm tackles.
She used to wake me up with coffee ever morning
