So, Francona will take a year off, and then be looking for a job after the 2012 season, right after Dusty's contract expires? This could work out very well indeed.

Cincinnati might be a pretty appealing job for Francona, too. After all the pressure and media scrutiny in Boston, a city with a slightly less intense approach and slightly more cool-headed fan base might be just the thing he needs.

Plus, there is a bit of Reds history with him.

Isn't he a similar type of manager as Dusty? A player's manager? If so I don't think he is what we need.

The difference between the 2 is that one can manage...has 2 rings...and the other can't manage and has zero.

I don't mind a players manager. Dusty is more of a "certain players" manager.

    Very well said.

For the most part, it seems Francona got along fine with the front office in Boston, which has taken a more sabermetric approach to the game in recent years. As such, I don't think we need to be too concerned about Francona being as "old school" as Dusty, or about Francona being too enamored with veterans who have no business playing every day.

Baker isn't "old school" he's "no school."

My thought's exactly, except I envision Baker getting replaced by Francona in mid-season THIS YEAR.

NO thanks, he can manage with a huge payroll. Dusty is a good manager, he drives us all crazy but he has taken 3 teams to the play offs.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

Dusty other two teams were the Giants and the Cubs. Way bigger payrolls than us. Francona has never managed anywhere but Boston besides breaking the curse is a pretty incredible accomplishment.

The Red Sox may have had a large payroll, but they were still at a significant salary disadvantage compared to the Yankees. As such, managing the Reds and going up against higher-salaried teams wouldn't be much of a new challenge for Francona at all.

Some believe it's more difficult to manage high payroll bc of the egos and over the top personalities involved with high salaries.
