Very sad news. He always struck me as someone who would hang around and be just good enough to be #25 on a roster for years. Sad to see his future snuffed out.
Benjamin Hill of MLB.com posted this on his blog a couple days ago. It is a recollection of remembrances of Halmen, particularly through his minor league days.
