    Dream Trades

As the Winter Meetings approach, I thought it would be fun to stick your proposed deals in this thread. Everybody understands its just for fun and these deals won't happen other than as a huge coincidence. So take your best shot at making the 2012 Cincinnati Reds a World Series Contender. Be sure to include the rationale for all teams participating in the deal and how the money would work for the Reds.

I'll start with a bit of a different deal than we've seen proposed on here.

Three Way Deal with the Nationals and the Astros:

Nationals get: Drew Stubbs, Nick Masset and Paul Janish
Astros get Steve Lombardozzi, Ian Desmond, Edinson Volquez and Denis Phipps
Reds get Drew Storen and Wandy Rodriguez

The Nationals have money and a desire to add a long term centefielder like Stubbs to play between Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth. Masset would strengthen the middle of the pen and allow them to use some of their financial strenghth to add one of many closers on the free agent market possibly at a bargain. Janish gives them a competent glove to replace Desmond until Anthony Rendon is ready to take over at 2B with Danny Espinoza sliding over to SS. OR, maybe they make a run at Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins?

The Astros unload the $23 Million owed to Wandy over the next 2 years and add potential long term players for SS and 3B in Desmond and Lombardozzi. Either could also fit at 2B. Volquez provides a backfill for the rotation who may come back and become a solid starter with still 3 years of control. Phipps adds another potential major leaguer who will be cheap as the Astros grow and develop.

The Reds add Wandy to provide more certainty and stability to the rotation with Cueto, Leake, Arroyo, and Bailey. Storen becomes the closer with Lecure, Ondrusek, Arredondo, Bray and Wood still around to set him up. The Reds deal three arb cases in Volquez, Masset and Janish and, with Storen still not arb eligible, take on a net of maybe $6 Million in 2012. That is something they can handle and gives them room for another lower cost vet in the pen or the IF if needed. The major pitching roles are all filled allowing Chapman to develop in AAA and be ready to add a solid arm to either the rotation or the pen when needed. Heisey gets his full time shot in CF with Alonso playing Left and providing a third middle of the order worthy bat. Sappelt and Frazier are still around for depth and as alternatives should Heisey prove to be a bench player or Alonso just not prove to be ready.

    Re: Dream Trades

I'll go. A variation on the ones I've been proposing since June:

    Blue Jays get:
    Votto
    Wood
    Cozart

    Reds get:
    Romero
    Escobar
    Thames (or Rasmus)
    Lind

    Then...

    A's get:
    Lind
    Stubbs
    Bailey
    Fransisco

    Reds get:
    Gonzalez
    Bailey

    Then...

    Red Sox get:
    Arroyo
    Rolen

    Reds get:
    Youkilis

That gives the Reds a lineup of:
    Phillips
    Escobar
    Alonso
    Youkilis
    Bruce
    Heisey
    Thames
    Mesigan

    A rotation of:
    Cueto
    Romero
    Leake
    Gonzalez
    Chapman/Volquez/et al
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. -- Terrance Mann (Field of Dreams)

    Re: Dream Trades

    Astros get........
    Stubbs

    Reds get.......
    Wandy Rodriguez

Astros rebuilding. They get homeboy Stubbs to man CF for years to come. They get payroll relief. I think it's a fair deal straight up for both. Reds get a guy who has posted a sub-3.60 e.r.a. the last 4 seasons. A guy who will go 6 or 7 innings per start more often than not. Red do take on additional payroll. But taking it on for starting pitching help is worth it, IMHO.

    Rays get.......
    Alonso
    Grandal
    Valaika
    Phipps

    Reds get.......
    Shields

Rays need a first baseman. They get 2 former #1 picks. They also get 2 guys who played in their state and should attract the hispanic fans. Valaika and Phipps could be solid backups, at a cheap rate. Rays have plenty of young pitching talent. Reds get that guy to be the man in their rotation. He posted a sub-3.00 e.r.a. last season, probably his best. The year before his e.r.a. was above 5.00. His value is at an all-time high, and the Rays would get the most for him right now, most likely. Reds add payroll, but a reasonable amount. Again, to me, it's worth adding payroll for solid starting pitching.

    Mariners get.......
    Bailey
    Neftali Soto
    Negron
    Fisher

    Reds get.........
    Pineda

To me, the jewel in this trade for the Mariners is Soto. He currently plays 1B after trying many positions. And with Votto a fixture there, might as well trade for something we need. Bailey might do well with a change of scenery. Mariners are rebuilding, get their future first baseman and a solid starting pitcher to replace Pineda in their rotation. Pretty much they get 2 solid players for a young starting pitcher who doesn't have much of a track record to go by yet. Reds get another stud pitcher for their improving rotation with these trades.

    Red Sox get........
    Arroyo (-$12M)
    Volquez (-headcase)
    Rolen (-$8M)

    Reds get..........
    Youkilis (+$12M)

I saw someone else post this trade. It really doesn't make much sense for the Red Sox. Although they do get Volquez, who might pan out. They add payroll and reduce the Reds. They take Rolen for the last year of his contract.

    Shields (+$7M)
    Pinero (minimum $)
    Cueto
    Leake
    Wandy R. (+$10.5M)
Wood (in triple A, backup for injuries)

    2B Phillips
    CF Sappelt
    1B Votto
    3B Youkilis
    RF Bruce
    LF Heisey
    C Mez/Hanigan
    SS Cozart

Vottomatic, I assume you mean Pineda?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Yes. I changed it.

Just for fun? Lets go hogwild then!

    Rays get:

    Yonder Alonso
    Yasmani Grandal
    Travis Wood
    Carlos Fisher
    Kyle Lotzkar

    Reds get:

    James Shields
    Jake McGee

    Astros get:

    Drew Stubbs
    Homer Bailey

    Reds get:

    Wandy Rodriquez

    A's get:

    Edinson Volquez
    Yorman Rodriguez
    Logan Ondrusek

    Reds get:

    Andrew Bailey

    Reds sign:

    Yeonis Cespedes
    Octavio Dotel
    Kelly Johnson (or) Laynce Nix
Dontrelle Willis (minor league deal if he doesn't sign elsewhere)

    Lineup:

    4 Brandon Phillips (R)
    8 Chris Heisey (R)
    3 Joey Votto (L)
    7 Yoenis Cespedes (R)
    9 Jay Bruce (L)
    5 Scott Rolen (R)
    2 Devin Mesoraco (R)
    6 Zach Cozart (R)

    Bench:

    Todd Frazier (R)
Paul Janish (R) (or) Didi Gregorious (B)
    Juan Francisco (L)
Kelly Johnson (L) (or) Laynce Nix (L)
    Dave Sappelt (R)
    Ryan Hannigan (R)

    Starters:

    Jonny Cueto (R)
    James Shields (R)
    Wandy Rodriguez (L)
    Bronson Arroyo (R)
    Mike Leake (R)

    Bullpen:

    Sam Lecure(R)
    Brad Boxberger (R)
    Jose Arredondo (R)
    Bill Bray (L)
    Octavio Dotel (R)
    Jake McGee (L)
    Andrew Bailey (R)

    - The 25th spot would come down to a 6th bat on the bench an a 7th arm in the pen.

    - i'd really like a LH hitter on the bench who can play all three spots. i might consider a deal with the Rox for Huston Street and Seth Smith instead of the OAK and HOU deals.

    Re: Dream Trades

Vottomatic, you are trading like 4-5 guys on the 40 man roster for 1 guy on the 40 man roster. Deals like that typically don't happen, not just because of money, but because teams simply don't have the open roster spots.

Here is one that I'd hate to do, but could be big as soon as this year and really extends the window.

Joey Votto, Edinson Volquez and Jeremy Horst to San Francisco for Madison Bumgarner, Jeremy Affeldt and Brandon Belt

I have thought about this type of deal. As part of it Belt is flipped to the Rays (along with Grandal) for Shields.

    1) I think the Reds should get Romo not Affelt.
    2) Its Joey Votto!!! The Reds get more than just Bumgarner, Belt & Romo.
I am not sure how much more. To me it seems that at least one of their top 5 prospects.
    3) These two deals net the team two #2 type starters & a closer. The team has the $10M playflex they started with plus $4M or so with replacing Votto's salary with Shields. So thats $14M to go get a left fielder via free agency or trade.

    Re: Dream Trades

    Dream trade? Ok let's see...

Bronson Arroyo, Juan Francisco & Rolen for Ryan Zimmerman or Evan Longoria

Something much more likely and would probably have a fairly close desired result.

Stubbs, Francisco & Rolen to the Mets for David Wright

Like clockwork I can always count on you to respond to me. What about corkedbat's dream trade? He's doing the same thing. He traded multiple 40-man guys for 1 guy.

Geez. Feel like you're stalking me at times.

I like it very much. But dougdirt says you can't do that because you're trading 4-5 guys off our 40-man for 2 guys who will go on the 40-man. Alonso is blocked by Votto. Grandal blocked by Mez/Hanigan. But both are the prized trading chips. I really feel like having to trade Wood is an overpayment at that point. Fisher and Lotzkar, I could really care less about. Shields really would look good in a Reds uniform. And McGee adds to our lefty specialist out of the bullpen. Nice.

    Astros get:

    Drew Stubbs
    Homer Bailey

    Reds get:

    Wandy Rodriquez
Would it really take both Stubbs and Bailey to get Wandy? I proposed Stubbs straight up. But I think Wandy would really help our rotation.

    A's get:

    Edinson Volquez
    Yorman Rodriguez
    Logan Ondrusek

    Reds get:

    Andrew Bailey
Another good idea. Volquez is in the doghouse and struggles with command. He needs a change of scenery. Yorman is in the doghouse for supposedly playing lazy, but his value is still high right now. Logan has his moments and is a good replacement for the cheap A's for Bailey. You seem to be overpaying a bit, but that's what the Reds would probably have to do.

    Reds sign:

    Yeonis Cespedes
    Octavio Dotel
    Kelly Johnson (or) Laynce Nix
Dontrelle Willis (minor league deal if he doesn't sign elsewhere)
Again I like it. I wish the Reds could unload Arroyo and then sign Kuroda. Obviously nearly impossible, but hey, this is the "dream trades" thread, so having fun is a prerequisite.

    Lineup:

    4 Brandon Phillips (R)
    8 Chris Heisey (R)
    3 Joey Votto (L)
    7 Yoenis Cespedes (R)
    9 Jay Bruce (L)
    5 Scott Rolen (R)
    2 Devin Mesoraco (R)
    6 Zach Cozart (R)

    Bench:

    Todd Frazier (R)
Paul Janish (R) (or) Didi Gregorious (B)
    Juan Francisco (L)
Kelly Johnson (L) (or) Laynce Nix (L)
    Dave Sappelt (R)
    Ryan Hannigan (R)

    Starters:

    Jonny Cueto (R)
    James Shields (R)
    Wandy Rodriguez (L)
    Bronson Arroyo (R)
    Mike Leake (R)

    Bullpen:

    Sam Lecure(R)
    Brad Boxberger (R)
    Jose Arredondo (R)
    Bill Bray (L)
    Octavio Dotel (R)
    Jake McGee (L)
    Andrew Bailey (R)

    - The 25th spot would come down to a 6th bat on the bench an a 7th arm in the pen.

    - i'd really like a LH hitter on the bench who can play all three spots. i might consider a deal with the Rox for Huston Street and Seth Smith instead of the OAK and HOU deals.
You had fun with it, and your targets were exactly the kind of players the Reds should be targeting. Good job.

    Re: Dream Trades

Under the heading, "It'll never happen in a million years ..." but if I could make any trade happen, I would trade Volquez back to the Rangers for Josh Hamilton. (this is dream trades, right? ) I then trade Grandal, Rolen, and Heisey to the Mets for David Wright.

    Starting Eight:
    Phillips - 2B
    Hamilton - LF
    Votto - 1B
    Bruce - RF
    Wright - 3B
    Mesoraco - C
    Stubbs - CF
    Cozart - SS

    BENCH:
    IF/OF - Fraizer
    IF - Cairo
    IF - Valaika
    OF - Sappelt
    OF - Phipps
    C - Hannigan

    Starters (Pitching)
    Cueto
    Bailey
    Leake
    Arroyo
    Wood

Bullpen: Sort of in flux as minor leagues sort out who is ready.

You still have Alonso and Fransisco, who could be traded to upgrade pitching.
Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one, and they don't want someone else's shoved into their face.
