As the Winter Meetings approach, I thought it would be fun to stick your proposed deals in this thread. Everybody understands its just for fun and these deals won't happen other than as a huge coincidence. So take your best shot at making the 2012 Cincinnati Reds a World Series Contender. Be sure to include the rationale for all teams participating in the deal and how the money would work for the Reds.
I'll start with a bit of a different deal than we've seen proposed on here.
Three Way Deal with the Nationals and the Astros:
Nationals get: Drew Stubbs, Nick Masset and Paul Janish
Astros get Steve Lombardozzi, Ian Desmond, Edinson Volquez and Denis Phipps
Reds get Drew Storen and Wandy Rodriguez
The Nationals have money and a desire to add a long term centefielder like Stubbs to play between Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth. Masset would strengthen the middle of the pen and allow them to use some of their financial strenghth to add one of many closers on the free agent market possibly at a bargain. Janish gives them a competent glove to replace Desmond until Anthony Rendon is ready to take over at 2B with Danny Espinoza sliding over to SS. OR, maybe they make a run at Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins?
The Astros unload the $23 Million owed to Wandy over the next 2 years and add potential long term players for SS and 3B in Desmond and Lombardozzi. Either could also fit at 2B. Volquez provides a backfill for the rotation who may come back and become a solid starter with still 3 years of control. Phipps adds another potential major leaguer who will be cheap as the Astros grow and develop.
The Reds add Wandy to provide more certainty and stability to the rotation with Cueto, Leake, Arroyo, and Bailey. Storen becomes the closer with Lecure, Ondrusek, Arredondo, Bray and Wood still around to set him up. The Reds deal three arb cases in Volquez, Masset and Janish and, with Storen still not arb eligible, take on a net of maybe $6 Million in 2012. That is something they can handle and gives them room for another lower cost vet in the pen or the IF if needed. The major pitching roles are all filled allowing Chapman to develop in AAA and be ready to add a solid arm to either the rotation or the pen when needed. Heisey gets his full time shot in CF with Alonso playing Left and providing a third middle of the order worthy bat. Sappelt and Frazier are still around for depth and as alternatives should Heisey prove to be a bench player or Alonso just not prove to be ready.
