While neither of these guys are likely to contribute to the Reds, Gallagher's stats are a lot more interesting to me than Atilano. Gallagher can rack up the Ks, and could prove valuable if he could limit the walks. Either way, Gallagher has been miserable his whole time in the bigs, but I have no problem giving him a flyer.

Someone has to pitch to all those hitters in Spring Training.

These are better guys to have stashed starting at AAA than the guys they have there now. I like the moves.

Would either RHPs Sean Gallagher or Luis Atilano rate on a Reds top 40 or 50 prospect list?

Gallagher is far above the experience limit to be a prospect. Atilano is about 35 innings over as well. Neither is a prospect anymore.

I see nothing but balls flying out of minor league stadiums with these two jewels.

Yep. Nothing but minor league filler. Pray that neither sees the big club.

I'm not sure I ever fully understand your sentiment (and that of others). On the one hand, sure if we've moved down the depth chart for where these two currently reside, yes, that means we've got problems.

On the other hand, it's a presumption that players can never improve. Perhaps something clicks or they learn something for our coaches' tutelage that moves them up a notch. Or we just need some long guys or spot starters for whatever reason.

If they're in our organization, I want them to succeed and if they can, help the big club. I understand that it's not a given that it will happen, but under our control. I wish them only the best.

But these guys are probably improvements over the guys the Reds had slated for the AAA rotation. Now the rotation is probably Chapman, Reinecke, Gallagher, Atilano and Tanner. Way better than Klinker, Hynick, McCulloch and probably Carroll. Carroll might be OK if Chapman stays on the big club in the pen, but the AAA rotation is pretty weak IMO. These guys are upgrades.

Who do Gallagher and Atilano replace?

I don't see those two as way better than anyone you listed (Klinker, Hynick, McCulloch, Carroll). Are they better just because they have MLB experience (even though they were both awful)?

Well, they are all filler so I agree with that point. I just think that Gallagher and especially Atilano might be competent emergency back end guys if the Reds need to go that far down the depth chart. I'm less confident of Hynick and McCulloch. Atilano struggled in 2010 as a starter for 16 major league starts (5.15 ERA) , but I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do at AAA now that he has had his elbow fixed. Beyond the 7 major league guys (Cueto, Arroyo, Bailey, Leake, Volquez, Wood and Chapman) the Reds don't have anyone farther down the depth chart (in Matt Maloney's old role). I'm hoping Atilano may be able to step back up with some health. Heck, a guy with a 5.15 ERA is better than a lot of 5th starters and would be a decent option to have stashed at AAA. I don't see any of the current group even being that.

I'd add LeCure to your starting depth chart.
